Meyler to manage Under-21 hurlers

-

FORMER Wexford, Kerry and Carlow senior hurling manager John Meyler has been appointed as the new manager of the Cork Under 21 hurling team.

The Wexford native, who hurled with his adopted Cork in the 1980s winning an All-Ireland title in 1986, has long been acknowledged as a coach with the ability to nurture young talent.

Meyler – who has strong links to hurling in Kerry whom he twice managed – won an All-Ireland Under-21 ‘B’ title during his time with the Kingdom and used a number of those players to bring Kerry to another level during a second successful tenure there in the last decade.

“He’s well qualified to bring Cork success,” Cork Chairman Ger Lane said at this week’s County Board Meeting.

“There have been some good minor teams and he’s well placed to bring them through.

“Now, we are looking for the authority to appoint selectors in conjunction with John.”

Meyler had previously served as a selector with the Cork senior hurling team under then manager Bertie Óg Murphy and has been involved with several successful club teams both inside and outside Cork.

He was a driving force in Kilmoyley’s domination of the Kerry championship in the Noughties and returned to Kerry last year to lead them to yet another county championship title.

He has been appointed to the Under-21 position for a term of two years.
