The Corkman

Black (and amber) day for Cork camogie

brilliantly past Aoife Murray in the Cork goal.

Three quick points followed for the now rampant Kilkenny with Katie Power and Julie Ann Malone adding to the Cork pain. Despite still having the bones of a quarter of an hour remaining Cork looked to be dead and buried as Kilkenny looked to inflict maximum pain where it counts, on the score board.

Credit to Cork they fought hard and a point from Katriona Mackey raised a cheer around the ground from Cork fans, but Kilkenny were able to play the game in the wrong part of the pitch for Cork without ever really looking to be in danger of letting this one slide.

Second half substitute Libby Coppinger also hit the target late on with Cotter also raising a late cheer when she smashed home a free to the Kilkenny net in the 60th minute however all late scores were nothing more than consolation as the final whistle sounded moments later.

The dismissal of Gemma O’Connor late on for a second yellow added to the Rebel pain on a bad day for the county’s camogie stars and fans. It must be said, however, that O’Connor’s early shower played no part in the result as Kilkenny deserved this title right from the first five minutes.

There will be a lot of soul searching undertaken in the weeks and months ahead however there is little doubt that this Cork side will have many big days ahead and are unlikely to go quietly from the national stage any time soon.
