Last Saturday in Croke Park Catriona Casey relinquished her grip on Ladies Senior All-Ireland Singles title following a gripping contest with Limerick’s Martina McMahon. It took over two hours on court to decide the destination of the title and nobody was disappointed after the thrilling fare both served up.

Having beaten McMahon in last year’s final, Casey went in as favourite but it was also noted the new champion was playing well. McMahon made the first statement of intent winning the first 21-10 but Casey fought back to take the second 21-14. All now rested on the crucial third and while Casey built up an 8 aces to 5 lead, McMahon responded and went 11-8 up. While Casey tried hard, McMahon soaked up everything that was thrown at her to take the third and the title, 21-10.

In 60x30 adult men’s semi-finals played over the weekend there was not joy for Philip O’Carroll, Ballydesmond who lost out to Michael Sheridan, Meath in Silver Master B Singles, while John Herlihy, St Finbarrs also ended on the losing side as he was beaten by Paddy Donovan, Laois in Golden Masters A Singles.
