Find out what’s coming your way on Culture Night this Friday
CULTURE Vultures are in for a treat tomorrow (Friday) with a raft of events to suit all ages and interests set to take place across the city and county to celebrate Culture Night 2016.
Now in its sixth year, the nationwide initiative offers the public a wonderful opportunity to be part of a magical celebration of the astounding wealth of cultural heritage that abounds on our own doorsteps.
People have been issued with an open invitation to immerse themselves in an evening of entertainment, discovery and adventure in the company of musicians, historians and artists.
Museums, galleries, churches, historic houses, artists’ studios and cultural centres will remain open until late in the evening, with people encouraged to wander in and out to sample their sights and sounds.
A full programme of free events has been planned for the Rebel County and city, offering people of all ages a superb opportunity to immerse themselves in our history and rekindle their love of all things Cork.
As in previous years the north and mid- Cork areas are leading the way in terms of the sheer scope of events planned for the day, with a packed programme of events that is as varied as it is interesting.
Highlights will include an Irish language screening of the animated movies ‘Star of the Sea’ at the Ionad Cultúrtha in Baile Mhúirn, and evening of traditional song and dance at the Orial House in Ballincollig and performances by local Comhaltas groups at Ó Murchú’s in Cill Na Martra and Milford Hall.
Scully’s Bar in Newmarket, famous for hosting one of the oldest music sessions in Ireland, will once again be rocking to the sounds of Sliabh Lucre music peppered with interludes of poetry, song and dance from locals and visiting guests.
Doneraile Park will also be busy on Friday with performances by Cuisle Avondhu and the Laharn Dancers from Lombardstown. A fascinating element of the will be a medley of writings and songs by artists associated with Doneraile by the local dramatic society.
This will include works by Edmund Spencer, Patrick O Kelly, An tAthairEoghan O Caoimh, John B Keane and Canon Sheehan among others.
Trio SoundOut will perform jazz classics and new material at Macroom Town Hall, the Lightbulb Theatre in Mallow will hold an open night and the Rockforest Bar in Castletownroche will host an evening of music and poetry under banner of the Fermoy Poetry Festival.
Cork City will also be busy on Culture Night, with a well planned itinerary ensuring that people will be able to catch multiple events.
These may include a 9pm performance by the Vanbrugh Quartet at City Hall or an exhibition of art, painting and music celebrating punk rock at the Camden Palace Hotel Community Centre curated by ex-Siouxie and the Banshees’s drummer Kenny Morris, while the City and County Archives will open its doors from 6-8pm, with a guide tour of its 1916 themed ‘View for the Record’ exhibition at 7pm.
The city’s rich and vibrant culinary scene will be celebrated through a series of mouth-watering events with the world famous English Market open for business late into the night and tours and beer tasting at The Franciscan Well Brewery.
A series of guided walks and tours will traverse the city across the whole of Friday taking in some of Cork’s landmark buildings including the City Gaol, Elizabeth Fort, The Lifetime Lab, St Fin Barre’s Cathedral and the UCC Visitor’s Centre.
