Deadline for Fermoy Area Sports and Community Awards nominations fast approaching

- BILL BROWNE

WITH the deadline for submissions to this year’s Fermoy Area Sports and Community Awards set to expire tomorrow (Friday, September 30), people have been urged not to miss out on naming who they think should be honoured.

Revived from the ashes of the former Fermoy Sports Awards by the Fermoy Enterprise Board, the newly fashioned initiative was first held in 2014 and proved to be a hugely popular addition to the local events calendar.

The winners of the awards, which are once again being sponsored by the McCarthy Insurance Group, Fermoy Credit Union and the AIB, will be unveiled at a glitzy awards ceremony in the Corrin Events Centre on Saturday, November 12.

As in 2014, award winners will be honoured in seven separate sporting categories, including and ‘Hall of Fame Award’, and three community categories.

There will also be one overall winner chosen from the other 10 recipients who will be presented with their special citation at the awards nights

In 2014 Fermoy GAA won the overall award, with John Rice becoming the inaugural inductee into the Hall of Fame.

Nominations for the 2016 awards are being accepted for clubs, community and voluntary groups and sports-people from Fermoy and surrounding areas including Rathcormac, Ballyhooley, Castleyons, Kilworth, Conna, Castletownroche, Bartlemy, Ballynoe and all areas in between.

Pat Morrissey, marketing manager with Fermoy Credit union, said it was important to note that any member of the public can enter nominations.

“As in 2014 the awards have caught the imaginations of people. There has already been plenty of interest across the board, with a number of nominations being made in all of the categories, which is great to see,” said Pat.

“There is still time to make last minute entries and I would ask people to take a few minutes to nominate an individual or group they feel have made a significant contribution to their community. These are often ‘unsung heroes’, so this is a wonderful way to honour the work that enriches the lives of so many,” he added.

Nomination forms are available online at the McCarthy Insurance and Fermoy Credit Union websites with hard copies also available from Barnes Jewellers and Slattery Travel.

Tickets for the gala bash, priced at €40 are available from Noel Barnes (086 384 9698) and Joe Slattery (086 820 7368).

Early booking is advised as they are expected to sell-out very quickly.
