Full steam ahead for our new show: ‘West Cork Story’

- BY CIARA WALSH

AS a new school year rolled around once more, we were all waiting in anticipation to start what we had been talking about all summer – our Transition Year Show.

And we didn’t have to wait long as the first auditions were held the first Monday we were back.

Director of the show, Mrs Catherine Long, was there to pick the perfect person to play each role for what promises to be a brilliant show, ‘West Cork Story’.

The list of people who had successfully auditioned was posted on our Transition Year notice board at lunchtime on Friday and, as the names were revealed, the area became a hub of excitement, each checking to see who is playing each part. With congratulations over, it was onto the task ahead and learning our lines.

At 2pm on Monday we all went to the library to read the script for the first time. We absolutely loved the plot from the minute we started reading and were in stitches laughing for the whole two hours!

The show consists of Romeo & Juliet and a wide variety of their family and friends. Further action comes in the form of two rival gangs, the culchies known as the ‘Combine Harmonies’ and the townies called the ‘Garden Bellas’.

We’re becoming increasingly familiar with the script but there’s plenty of scene work at our rehearsals every Monday.

We’re also learning songs and adding harmonies to them with music teacher, Ms Donovan.

So there’s a lot of work going on behind the scenes, particularly as all the girls are being fitted with costumes by our excellent wardrobe department.

Every person in our year has a different, important part to play in making our dream a reality and everyone is thoroughly enjoying this new and exciting experience.

We will be extremely busy preparing and perfecting the show in the coming weeks before ‘West Cork Story’ comes to life on November 24 and 25 in Clondrohid Hall. Keep the dates free!
