GAA NEWS
CONDOLENCES – Killavullen GAA Club would like to extend their condolences to the family of Denis O’Connor from Lavally Lower. Anyone deeply involved with the club would remember juvenile matches when the red van pulled up, and the entire team jumped out ready for action. Denis loved sport and was immensely proud of the achievements of Killavullen GAA, whatever the age group or grade. To his wife Maureen and family Margaret, Denis and Edmond we offer our sympathies.
COUNTY BOARD DRAW – The club has a number of tickets available for the County Board Clubs draw, that is being promoted at the moment. The cost of a full ticket is €100 but a syndicate of more than one person is very welcome also. This draw finances the county development squads, of which we have a number of players involved with, but also, a significant portion (45%) of the €100 stays with Killavullen GAA club, to finance capital and on-going club expenditure. Contact any GAA club member for further details, or check out the very informative website – corkgaadraw.ie/
FORTHCOMING MATCHES – Minor Hurling League semi-final Killavullen V Croke Rovers in Kilbrin at 2 p.m. on Saturday, October 1.
UNDER-14 COUNTY SEMI-FINAL – Killavullen under-14 footballers had to give best to a very impressive Aghabullogue team in the County B Football semi-final, played at Glantane. The early exchanges were tight with the teams level on a point a piece after 15 minutes. Aghabullogue’s greater physical strength began to show and two goals in quick succession had Aghabullogue eight points to the good at half time.
Killavullen never gave up in the second half but found it difficult to make significance inroads on a very tight defence. Aghabullogue finished with some well taken scores to run out deserving winners, they now move on to meet Clonakilty in the final.
Killavullen can look back on a very successful year having bagged both the Cork North football league and football championship double. The future is very bright for this group of players. The Killavullen squad consisted of: James O’Keeffe, Conor Griffin, Darragh O’Grady, Seán Bartley, Michael Cagney, Brian Cotter, Ronan Barry, Eoin Birchill (captain), Mark Nagle, Michael Walsh, Colm Looney, Seán Palmer, Colin Carey, Séamus O’Mahony, Jamie Magner, Shane Walsh, Colm Nagle, Ben Hunter, Thomas Mohally, Jack Martin and Kieran Roche. Coaches: James O’Mahony, Richard Griffin and Jim Palmer.
UNDER-16 – Killavullen played Buttevant in Kildorrery on Thursday, September 22, under lights. On the night Killavullen were slow to get going and Buttevant were well on top in midfield and went into an early 3-point lead. Pádraig Looney converted a free and Eddie Cotter scored a point from play before Buttevant scored a scrappy goal which was bound to come with the pressure the were putting on our backs. Just before half time Pádraig Looney scored a goal to leave Killavullen losing 1-6 to 1-2.
On the resumption of play Killavullen upped their performance and scored two frees to bring the match to a 2-point lead by Buttevant. This was followed by Buttevant scoring a goal which gave them a comfortable lead which they held for the remainder of the game. For the last 15 minutes both teams scored four points each, Killavullen had two from Michael Fresh who put in some impressive runs throughout the game, and one from Niall O’Neill.
The backline which consisted of Seán Brown, Brian Cotter, Darren Murphy and Fionn Magner worked tirelessly all night along with Cian Lankford in goals. Up front Eddie Cotter, Pádraig Looney, Liam Fox and Noah Butler competed well with a very physical Buttevant side. On the night Killavullen had one sub on the line Mark Nagle who had to replace Mickey Looney who was injured after 10 minutes.
The team must be complimented on how well they played all year and with such a limited squad of players it was a great achievement to reach a North Cork Final. This experience will stand well to these lads who are the future of Killavullen GA club and will undoubtedly bring plenty cups to Killavullen in the future. Final score was 2-11 to 1.9, best of luck to Buttevant in the county semi-final.
Team: Cian Lankford, Cian O’Connor, Seán Brown, Mickey Looney, Fionn Manger, Eddie Cotter (1 point), Darren Murphy, Pádraig Looney (C)(1-5 four from frees), Noah Butler, Brian Cotter, Michael Fresh (2 points), Liam Fox, Jamie Cole, Niall O’Neill (1 point) and Mark Nagle
JUNIOR B HURLING – In a good game of hurling, played on September 25 (last Sunday) in Castletownroche, Mallow defeated Killavullen by a goal, 1-19 to 2-13 to advance to represent the Avondhu division in the County Series of the Junior B Hurling. Mallow had the opening point of the game by Ryan Harkin in the first min before former Cork County senior hurler and all-Ireland winner Fergal McCormack got his opening point from play in the second minute. He was to go on to score 0-10, with 0-08 of that tally coming from frees.
Mallow scored again in the same minute and it looked as if it was going to be a long hour for Killavullen. We had a good point from Ian O’Gorman from a long distance free in the fourth minute before Barry Murphy got a point from play in the fifth minute. Mallow scored again in the sixth, seventh eighth and ninth minutes to leave us fighting an uphill battle. Barry got a hard earned free in the 10th minute when a penalty could have been awarded on any other day. Killavullen got the next score when Paul O’Sullivan fired over a point in the 13th minute and Liam Cronin got another in the 15th.
Half way through the half now, the score for Killavullen was 0-05 against 0-07 for Mallow. Mallow were awarded some frees that McCormack did not miss, and scored in the 18th and 20th minutes. Pa Egan broke through some tackles and scored a point for us in the 21st minute but Mallow scored points again in the 22nd and 25th minutes. In between those last two scores, Liam Cronin fired over another point for us in the 23rd minute. Barry Murphy scored another free in the 26th minutes, and then Mallow got the last three points of the half, to lead at the break on a score of by 0-14 against our score of 0-08, with six of Mallow scores coming from frees.
In a tight enough game, the concession of these frees was costly, and the same pattern was to evolve in the second half, with some soft frees awarded, as much by crowd reaction as play on the field. Mallow scored in the seventh and ninth minutes and the tempo of the game was to go up a notch or two. Tough, uncompromising hurling with the crowd getting more vociferous, was how this game was to play out. Killavullen scored a 65 metre free in the 14th minute by Liam Cronin before a moment of controversy in the 15th minute.
Mallow was awarded a goal by the referee when the umpire had waved it wide. The neutral umpire at the point flag had it wide as well, but the referee over ruled it. The sliotar seemed to hit the goal flag which was outside the post, and diverted in under the net, into the goal area, striking the goalie’s hurling bag. Tough call for the referee, but the person nearest the action should be allowed to make a decision.
Mallow were in a prominent position now, and got a point in the 16th minute and again in the 20th before Charlie Lillis stopped the rot for us with a point in the 21st minute. The Mallow substitute scored a point in the 24th minute when he looked as it was a certainty that he would goal and that was to be the final score of their game. Killavullen were not undone yet and Liam Cronin riffled in a goal in the 23rd minute to breathe some life into our effort. The Mallow goalkeeper made an outstanding save from Charlie Lillis immediately afterwards and Seán O’Regan got a point in the 29th minute.
With Killavullen pressing hard, Mallow were reduced to 14 players for a moment of madness off the ball and we were awarded a penalty which Barry expertly scored in the 31st minute, to leave only three point between the teams. In the three minutes of injury time, that followed, we threatened to get that equalising goal, but the Mallow rear guard held firm. These hard intense types of games are exactly what we need if we are to advance in the Junior B County next year, so all in all, despite the defeat today, the year must be considered a success of sorts, winning promotion from Division three hurling and winning the North Cork Junior B1 championship.
Within this being the final adult game of the year, a small bit of reflection on 2016 was necessary afterwards. The trick next year for the management team of John, Barry, Brian and Ed will be to supplement this team with more young players and for those young players to integrate into the team and play with intensity and spirit.
Afterwards in the dressing room John Hartnett and his management team of Barry, Brian and Ed thanked the players for their very fine effort since February and urged them to keep the momentum within the club going upwards. Unprecedented numbers of juvenile players, all expecting to morph into ‘yokes’(Barry Murphy expression) that will play for the adult club in the future is a welcome development. Note – Brilliant statistics throughout the year by Séamus O’Mahony for which the club is very grateful as it gives a very concise analysis of the games.
Team and scorers: Tommy Cremin, Stephen Rice, Paddy Nagle, Gearoid Sheehan, Pa Sheehan, Billy Norris, Séamus Fox, Ian O’Gorman (0-03, 0-02F and 0-01 x65), Pa Egan (0-01), Gary Lane, Seán O’Regan (0-01), Paul O’Sullivan (0-01), Charlie Lillis (0-01), Liam Cronin (1-03) and Barry Murphy (1-03).
