Lidl plan to replace Mitchelstown store with a new and larger outlet
DECISION DUE TO ON SIMILAR APPLICATION FOR KANTURK STORE BY THE END OF MONTH
GERMAN discount giant Lidl has set in motion a plan to further expand its North Cork operation by demolishing its existing Mitchelstown store and replacing it with a larger one.
If given the green light an application lodged with County Council planners would see the existing 1,768 sq metre store on the Fermoy Road being torn down.
Under the provisions of the application this would be replaced by a new 2,680 sq metre mono-pitched licenced discount store with associated infrastructural works ranging in height from one to two storeys.
The new building on the 2.7 acre site will incorporate an expanded 1,424 sq metre retail sales area incorporating an off-licence, bakery lobby, toilets, staff facilities, offices and storage areas on the ground floor.
The upper floor will include an IT room, staff toilets and canteen and roof terrace.
Externally, the application makes provision for new signage, a trolley bay and parking for 122 cars and 28 cycles and motorcycles.
While the main vehicular entrance to the Fermoy Road site remain in place, the plan also includes a dedicated new pedestrian access point adjacent to its northern boundary.
Council planners have set a date of November 24 to make a decision on the application.
It comes just weeks after Lidl lodged a similar application for its store for its Kanturk store, with planners set to deliver their ruling on that by the end of this month.
The company has remained tightlipped about its plans to expand its operations in the town of Mallow after planners refused permission for a second store on the Park Road in the town.
Meanwhile, An Bord Pleanala is set to deliver its decision on a proposal to build a new store at the site of the former 4Homes Superstore in Macroom next week.
The building, which had lain idle since 2009, was purchased by Lidl who in April of this year were given the green light to demolish the building and replace it with a 2,947 sq metre, two story retail outlet.
The plan also made provision for the demolition of the single storey extension to the front of the existing Lidl store, which it is proposed will be redeveloped into an education and training facility.
However, following the lodging of submissions under the name of Macroom based Obtean Investments Ltd, the proposal was referred to the appeals board, which has set a date of October 18 for their ruling on the appeal.
