Mini Co ideas are ‘wristy’ business but a sure-fire recipe for success

-

THE Transition Year timetable in St Mary’s includes a subject entitled Mini Company. In this class, we set up a small business and use our knowledge of business theory to try to make a profit.

We apply all the rules and have all the positions of any other business. The team has invested €6 each in the company.

We have ‘Mini Co’ class once a week for two hours on Thursday mornings. The purpose of forming a Mini Co is to get an insight into how a real business is managed.

We wrote a CV and letter to Miss Tobin so that she could choose suitable positions for each of the students. We were all very nervous waiting to find out roles. I got the position of Vice Manager. I help our manager, Carolyn, to decide what to do in our treble class each week and to make sure that everything runs smoothly.

The company had to have a name, so we came up with multiple names and eventually selected ‘Keeping Up With The Kreators’. We chose this name because we thought it would be catchy and easy to remember. It is, of course, a play on the name of popular television programme ‘Keeping up with the Kardashians’. We thought this would be a good choice as our potential customers – our fellow students – are very familiar with the Kardashians.

Our product will be red and navy wristbands with St Mary’s Macroom emblazoned on them and a recipe book which includes some of our favourite recipes. We aim to involve the whole school in coming up with amazing recipes. Hopefully all our work will pay off and we will make a good profit at the end of the nine weeks!

Next week, we are ordering the wrist bands and will begin working on our recipe book. Visiting all the classes in the school and asking students for recipes will start the process. Teachers might share some of their recipes too!

The wristbands will be sold for €2 each, while the recipe book will be €4.

We have several challenges ahead, as printers need to be haggled with and markets need to be identified and targeted, but we are certainly up for those challenges.
