We may need a break or two – Murphy

- BY JOHN TARRANT

ROCKCHAPEL captain William Murphy and a number of his colleagues have exhibited their qualities and credentials over the past seven seasons, building up experience to play in their 4th county final against Bandon in the intermediate decider at Pairc Uí Rinn on Sunday.

Their record is pretty good, helping Meelin to land the 2010 County JAHC on victory over Cloughdubh before progressing to complete a fairytale journey to add Munster and All Ireland honours much to the delight of their enthusiastic Duhallow supporters.

Far from resting on their laurels, the Murphy brothers, Collins cousins and company are no mean performers on the big ball and helped Rockchapel to a County JAFC title in 2012 on victory over Kilmurry.

“That win elevated us up to intermediate level where Rockchapel have performed consistently. Owing to Cork reaching the 2013 All Ireland SHC Final and subsequent replay, there was a lengthy wait to the semi final where we were defeated by eventual champions Grenagh,” he said.

And a good run from the following season saw Rockchapel jump the formidable obstacle provided by Cill na Martra in the penultimate hurdle and progress to the decider only to incur a defeat by Éire Óg.

“That outcome was disappointing against a solid Éire Óg side that deserved their success. Hopefully we ‘ve learned from that experience and can make the most of returning to another county final,” said Murphy.

“Not the greatest of campaigns in 2015 where our campaign ended on a defeat to Mayfield in round 4. A new season surfaced where we’ve taken it game by game, so far, so good on returning to another county final.”

From round 1, Rockchapel grinded out a victory over Youghal when playing no where near their full potential. However, Rockchapel climbed a notch in the subsequent outings to impress against Glanworth before claiming comfortable victories over Aghabullogue and Millstreet.

“It’s a great feeling to be in a final, that’s what each team strives for at the start of each campaign and the experience of the big stage has got us to this Sunday.”

Murphy acknowledges a tough task lays ahead of facing a Bandon side, seen as favourites in neutral quarters to complete a rare county double in just eight days.

“Following a terrific win over Fermoy in the County Premier IHC, maintaining a winning streak is sure to act as a positive mindset for Bandon. And their recent results has seen big scoring tallies clocked up against some of the fancied football teams.”

However, the Rockchapel captain is hopeful his side can accomplish their own mission on Sunday.

“We have a great bunch of players involved, the experience of performing on county final day is nothing new.

“All involved will strive to win but it may require a break or two to achieve our goal.”
