HERITAGE

Buttevant heritage group is always active in tracing the archaeolog­ical historical and medieval locations and details with regard to Buttevant and the surroundin­g area. The local heritage group will hold its’ annual general meeting for the coming period 2016/2017 on Monday, October 17, in the Muintir na Tire Hall, Buttevant. The meeting is timed to commence at 7 p.m. and it is hoped that anyone interested in becoming a part of this group will attend this meeting.

ROADWORKS

Although the STREETSCAP­E project has been completed on the Main Street of Buttevant there is still some on-going roadworks on the Mallow/Ballybeg side of the town. This re-surfacing as earmarked for some time and is due to be completed within themnextmw­eek or so. The town area is resplenden­t since the STREETSCAP­E and footpath repairs and has drawn much praise from visitorsma­ny tourists to the town. The footpaths have become somewhat stained from dog droppings and leave staining but plans are afoot to have work carried out in the near future to rectify this problem.

SOCCER CLUB

Buttevant soccer club held their annual charity walk in aid of Marymount Hospice recently which was a tremendous success. The walk was held in the Killarney area and the occasion was enjoyed by all participan­ts. There was great support both participat­ing and financiall­y and the sponsorshi­p area will remain open for another number of weeks.

The club continues to hold its weekly local lottery draw the funds for which are utilised to help run the clubs’ facilities. The monetary prize jackpot has now reached €10,600 and will continue to rise till it is won. The jackpot van be won on the choice of four numbers which match the four lucky numbers drawn on draw night. The draw takes place locally on Thursday night at an appointed public venue and draw cards can be purchased at local retail outlets or from the clubhouse. Your support is always appreciate­d.

HARVEST MASS

The annual Harest Thanksgivi­ng Mass will be celebrated in St Mary’s’ Chirch Buttevant as part of the weekly Saturday Vigil Mass on October 22, at 6.30 p.m. Donations of harvest food should be dropped to the church on Thursday, October 20. The junior pastoral council members will co-ordinat the display on Friday, October 21. All donations of relevant harvest items will be greatly received.

MISSION

The annual Mission Sunday Mass will be celebrate in Buttevant on Sunday, October 23, at 11.30 a.m. It is hoped to display names of missionari­es and volunteers from the parish who work abroad as missionari­es and volunteers in the church over the weekend. All relevant informatio­n should be given to local parish priest Fr Baker as soon as possible.

CELEBRATIO­N

Buttevant Community Council is organising an occasion of celebratio­n to mark the ‘opening’ of the main street following the STREETSCAP­E completion. It is hoped to have an ‘open-air-fun’ celebratio­n with lots of different type stalls demonstrat­ions and fun for the younger folk with the emphasis on fun.

Although the STREETSCAP­E was a long protracted process the end product is to be admired and appreciate­d. The contractor­s are to be congratula­ted for their work and endeavours and their co-operation when approached. The local community is also to be commended for their patience and tolerance throughout the period and we must all now take pride in our place of where we live.

VANDALISM

There have been many robberies break-ins and vandalism in the Buttevant area recently with property being damaged good stolen and general acts of vandalism happenings. Everybody should be concerned by these happenings­many should report any strange vehicles persons or actions in the local area. Older people are extremely vulnerable to these intruders and we should all be alert to the needs and welfare of our senior citizens.
