Help preserve your own piece of 1916 history

- BILL BROWNE

PEOPLE from across Cork have been issued with an open invitation to participate in a unique project aimed at ensuring their stories about one of the most pivotal eras in Irish history are preserved for future generations.

It would be no exaggeration to say that every Irish family has some connection with the 1916 Rising, be it a story passed down through the family or a piece of memorabilia connected to the period.

As the years pass many of these stories are lost in the mists of time and important artefacts lost or stored in forgotten corners of family homes.

With this in mind, Cork based production company Framework Films has come up with an innovative way of making sure that these stories and that these forgotten items of significant historical importance are recorded for posterity.

Under the auspices of their 2016 Cork Memorybank Project, a team from the company will later this month be visiting locations across the county armed with a microphone and camera.

They will record members of the public who with to tell their stories or show a piece of memorabilia connected with 1916.

The footage they shoot will then be compiled into the ‘Cork Memorybank Project DVD’, a copy of which will be donated to the Cork City and County Archives for preservation in the Cork County 2016 Event Archive collection.

The team will be in Cobh and Bandon on November 28/29 before coming to Mallow Library from 10am-1pm on Wednesday, November 30.

Emma Bowell of Frameworks Films said the company has produced a wide variety of documentaries about Cork over the years.

“We know that for every story that makes its way into a broadcast documentary, there are hundreds of other stories within local communities that never get told,” she said.

Ms Bowell said the events commemorating the 100th anniversary of 1916 had helped “re-jog people’s memories”.

“As a result many stories are emerging from the woodwork of families’ collective histories and the Memorybank Project aims to collect as many of these as we can in order to preserve them for the generations to come”.

Anyone interested in taking part in the initiative should phone 021 421 1010 or email info@frameworksfilms to be given a time slot and further information.
