Cork Music Station on the internet attracts diverse audiences from across the world

- JOHN TARRANT

RADIO listeners wishing for a break from the modern world with all its bleeps, blips and pushy commercials are tuning into internet radio that continues to grow in popularity. That’s typified on the feedback to the Cork Music Station, which originated in the heart of Duhallow.

The charming station was initiated four years ago by Cullen based father and son Willie and John Fitzgerald. And a get together last weekend in Carriganima confirmed the station is attracting a growing number of listeners to www.corkmusicstation.com.

“Interest in internet radio is on the increase. For us, it’s a hobby and a love of country music to play it globally and promote local events to listeners at home and abroad. Operating 24-7, we have a stream of followers from USA, Europe to New Zealand and Australia,” said Willie.

The station can afford listeners a much needed break from the modern world as guest presenters add to the interest of loyal listeners that include Newmarket’s Breeda Piggott, TT Howard from Ballydesmond, Barry O’Halloran of Ballinhassig, Pat Daly, Eilis O’Sullivan, Michael and Susan Murphy, Mallow; Maureen Henry from Mayo, Welsh native Dean Browne and Willie Fitzgerald.

Millstreet DJ Seán Radley makes an appearance on each Tuesday night with his highly popular ‘Radio Treasures’ featuring chat to a selection of favourite songs from the 1940s, 1950s, 1960s and 1970s incorporating musicals and light classical.

“We now have regular dedicated listeners in Ireland, London, Portugal, Sydney in Australia as well as many in the USA. It’s a wonderful team, the personnel are so committed, broadcasting from their own sitting rooms to the world,” said Seán.

All of the DJs work out of their homes and at different stages the Cork Music Station operates live from concerts, such as the Hot Country Awards and community events.

“The station promotes local acts in addition to featuring the big names on the circuit. After a day’s work it’s a means of chilling out,” said Willie.
