St Peters step up to the plate for minor C crown

Two determined sides battled it out to the last whistle and provided supporters with a hugely entertaini­ng tussle. Having trailed at the break after performed against the breeze, the Rockchapel and Meelin based side dug deep with a gritty resolve during the third quarter to alter the scoreboard and subsequent­ly put up the shutters to deny Bishopstow­n a chance to secure a late winner.

Though Bishopstow­n opened the scoring, St. Peters answered on points to Kelly Anne Mulcahy and Rachel Carroll before Mulcahy pounced for a goal. However, Bishopstow­n got to grips with the situation and a productive spell yielded scores for the city girls jump ahead 1-4 to 1-2 at the break.

On the restart, the football was fast and hugely competitiv­e, St. Peters shading the general play.

Key performers saw Jenny Murphy operate in a sweeper role in a capable defence that featured effective ‘keeper Norma Murphy fronted by Patricia Murphy, Laura Murphy, Laura Carroll and Katie Stack effective.

Upfront Kelly Mulcahy operated with great pace as points from Katie Mulcahy, Katelyn Walsh, Carroll and Emma Roche shifted the initiative to Peters. However, the scoring rate dried up during the closing quarter, making for a tense and exciting finish.

And in the seven minutes of added on time, St. Peters showed commendabl­e resilience and determinat­ion to retain an all important two point lead at the full time whistle.
