Cork Pops Orchestra school concert leaves them dancing in the aisles

-

SOME 40 students from Macroom’s McEgan College, accompanied by two of their teachers –Mr Sheehan and Ms Bourke – as well as SNAs, recently attended the Cork Pops orchestra school concert at City Hall in Cork city.

All first years, six second year music students, and the mild/moderate GLD class attended the hour-long concert ‘ The Colours of Music’, which was centred around the idea of the relationship between music and specific colours, which is realised especially in people with synaesthesia.

Students were also able to see and hear various orchestral instruments during the concert, with pieces focussing on specific instruments.

This was an invaluable resource for the students studying music, as they were able to get a real sense of what these instruments looked like, how they sounded and how they were played, which would aid them in further studies of musical pieces in school.

Students were also treated to performances by Keith Hanley (winner of the Voice of Ireland 2013) and DJ Dashka (Spin South West DJ), who performed some more modern pieces which students were more familiar with.

These performances created quite a buzz in the hall, as students and teachers gladly got up and danced to the Chainsmokers’ hit ‘Closer’, which received thunderous applause from the entire audience.

This performance also demonstrated new musical technology in the form of the launchpad controller, which is creeping into various genres of music nowadays, yet is an instrument many of the students may not be entirely aware of as yet.
