Three goal Catherines have too much for Kilshannig in final

The Conna-Ballynoe side took the lead again through Eoin O’Neill. Jack Twomey with a Kilshannig pointed free had the sides level for the third time. Good play by Diarmuid O’Sullivan led to a Jack Twomey point off the keeper. St Catherine’s were back on terms when Luke Beecher put Ben O’Brien in for a fine point.

They were level for the fifth time by the end of the first quarter when Diarmuid O’Sullivan and Rory Galvin (free) swapped a point. St Catherine’s had their first goal by Kieran English who soloed through from the ‘40.

The Saints came close to another goal but Chris Taylor saved well from a goalmouth scramble. In the 23rd minute good play by Diarmuid O’Sullivan led to a well taken Jack Twomey point. Rory Galvin replied with the Avondhu side having a late pointed free by Jack Twomey that cut the lead at the break 1-6 to 0-7.

On the resumption Chris Taylor came to his sides rescue again making a fine save from Rory Galvin. Jack Twomey with two pointed frees levelled at 1-6 to 0-9. Both sides were off target before Kilshannig edged in front when Diarmuid O’Sullivan pointed from a very tight angle. Scores were scarce for a period with both sides missing a few chances. Entering the final quarter Rory Galvin levelled from a free 1-7 to 0-10.

The winner’s second goal came in the 46th minute. A Kilshannig free came off the post and was cleared to Robert English who placed his brother Kieran who netted. This was a major blow to the Avondhu side who being short the McMahon brothers and Mark Ring battled to the end.

Jack Twomey kept them in touch with a free. St Catherine’s had two quick points and their keeper Eoin Davis saved well from a Kilshannig free. In the 53rd minute Kilshannig had their last score when Conor Sexton worked well for Diarmuid O’Sullivan who cut the lead to three points 2-9 to 0-12.

The winners had their third goal when Conor Hickey’s effort from close range was saved by Chris Taylor with the rebound coming kindly to Hickey who belted to the net. They followed with a Rory Galvin pointed free and emerged winners by a seven point margin.

After the game John Purcell Chairman Rebel Og presented the cup to the winning captain Rory Galvin.
