Mitchelsto­wn minors do the double

MITCHELSTO­WN Premier (2) Minor footballer­s made it a league and championsh­ip double on Saturday when they had a single point win over Kilmurry in the County MFL final at Blarney.

It was a keenly contested game all through. The opening half was very even with the sides level 0-1, 0-2, 0-3 and 0-4 each after 15 minutes. Sean Walsh fetched some great catches in midfield for the winners while both defences were very tight.

Eoin Curzon saved well from Cathal O’Mahony before Eoin Clifford made a great run and gave Kilmurry the lead.

The Mid Cork side edged two points clear when John O’Mullane and Greg Fitton worked well with James O’Mullane who placed Sean Warren for a very good point. In the closing moments Cathal O’Mahony soloed through and kicked a great point that cut the lead 0-6 to 0-5 at the break.

Both sides had a number of wides on the resumption. It took till the 40th minute for the first score when James O’Mullane and John Enderson worked well for John O’Mullane who pointed.

In the 43rd minute Sean Flanagan made it 0-8 to 0-5.

Mitchelsto­wn made a master move, they put Mark Keane at full forward with Dylan Reidy Price going to the ‘40. Price and Keane won great ball and created some good chances.

The goal came from a free by Mark Keane who picked out Dylan Reidy-Price who netted from close range and levelled. Good play by Cathal O’Mahony and Mark Keane led to a Dylan Reidy-Price point off the keeper 1-6 to 0-8.

Mark Keane added a point. Kilmurry closed the gap to a point and extra time looked very likely with four minutes to go. Sean Warren levelled. In the 29th minute Sean O’Sullivan cut through for a good point for ‘Town.

The Avondhu side added another and were 1-9 to 0-10 ahead in injury time. Deep in injury time Sean Warren pointed a Kilmurry free.

Mitchelsto­wn held out for a close one point win. After the game Donal O’Leary of Rebel Óg County Board presented the cup to the winning captain Sean Walsh.
