BANTEER RESIDENT MARY NEEDED LIFESAVING SURGERY AFTER CRASH THAT KILLED THREE

- MARIA HERLIHY

A HORROR two-car collision has left a mother who lives in Banteer, her partner and four children still in hospital and three other men dead.

Gary Fenton of Cobh and his partner, Mary Bermingham who lives in Banteer, and four children aged between six and 14 years were involved in a horrific crash about 5km from Dungarvan on the Military Road, the N72, which acts as a bypass route for the town in West Waterford on Sunday morning. Both Ms Bermingham and Mr Fenton underwent surgery after surviving the crash.

On Wednesday, two of the three dead men were named as Eamon Dixon and Michael Tobin, who died after their car caught fire following the collision. The third man has yet to be formally named.

A forensic examination of the crash took place on Monday morning and both vehicles were removed from the scene on Sunday night to undergo technical examination. It is understood Mr Fenton and Ms Bermingham and the children were on their way to a Christmas festival in Waterford when the accident happened.

Mary Bermingham previously lost a brother, Christopher, in a car crash two years ago. Mr Fenton is a member of the Naval Service attached to the LE William Butler Yeats ship.

The two cars, a small salon and a people carrier, collided head-on on Military Road just before 10am on Sunday morning. It is understood the smaller car exploded in an intense fireball just seconds after impact - killing the three men inside.
