LOVELY HURLING, LORCÁN
A surprised Cork hurler Lorcán McLoughlin said it was dance partner Edel Twohig who led him on a merry dance to win ‘Strictly Comes to Kanturk’ last weekend
CORK hurler Lorcán McLoughlin proved he is equally adept on the dance floor as the sports pitch when he and his gifted dance partner Edel Twohig emerged as winners at Strictly Comes To Kanturk, which saw a capacity audience pack the Edel Quinn Hall last weekend.
However, to say the normally highly competitive Lorcán was surprised at their win would be an understatement. “I was shocked, to be honest. I was only hoping to get through it without messing up completely but Edel carried me through” he told the Corkman.
Edel, meanwhile, said the night itself was fantastic but it was the overall experience with the group that made it. “I’m totally in shock over winning, we really did not see it coming at all, but of course we were delighted,” she said.
“Even though I didn’t want to do it initially, I’d do it again in a heartbeat. I’d say we all would!” Edel added.
Strictly Comes To Kanturk was a fundraiser for the Girls National School and Principal Derval Vaughan commended everyone involved. “It has been an amazing two months, thanks to a fantastic parents’ association, to everyone who sponsored us, and a huge thank you to our dancers who we coerced and cajoled into performing!” Derval said.
Before the event commenced MC Michael Browne advised the audience that they would “see moves never witnessed before in this hall and possibly never again”.
“I think ye will be pleasantly surprised,” he said with a smile.
In fact, Michael got things off to a flying start with a verse of the Hucklebuck accompanied by some class moves himself!
Judges Andy Walsh, Lesley Anne Radcliffe, Julie Nolan and Mick Winters had their work cut out for them to choose a winning couple – because, ultimately, each pair deserved the top accolade for the dedicated work and long hours of rehearsals they put in over the eight weeks prior to the event.
