A POPULAR voluntary community worker and a local residents’ association have been unveiled as the winners of prestigious accolades by the organisers of the Mallow and District Leisure Awards.

Mallow’s Sean Ryan will be inducted into the Hall of Fame and the Sean Moylan Park Residents Association will receive the Community Award at the prize giving ceremony in the Springfort Hall Hotel next March.

Guest of honour for the glamorous bash will be World Champion and Olympic bronze medal winning race walker Rob Heffernan.

Nominations are now being accepted for the Corkman, AIB and Cathal Lombard Solicitors sponsored awards across three separate categories: Youth, Adult Sport and Club Person.

Awards committee member Roisin Moriarty called on people across the region to nominate the “unsung heroes” whose hard work and achievements inspire all those around them and make their communities “such great places to live and work in”.

THE “tireless” commitment shown by a volunteer to the community in Mallow and the “phenomenal” work of a local resident’s association have been rewarded with prestigious accolades.

The organising committee of the Mallow and District Leisure Awards this week unveiled popular Mallow man Sean Ryan as the latest inductee into its Hall of Fame, with the Sean Moylan Park Resident’s Association scooping their coveted Community Award.

Both will be presented with their trophies at a glittering awards ceremony in the Springfort Hall Hotel on Saturday, March.

Committee spokesperson Roisin Moriarty also revealed that they have secured a very special guest for the night – World Champion and Olympic bronze medal winning race walker Rob Heffernan.

“It is hugely exciting to have an athlete of Rob’s calibre as out guests for the awards. We are delighted that he will be with us to celebrate all that is good in the community across Mallow and the surrounding areas,” said Roisin.

She said nominations are also now being accepted for the Corkman, AIB and Cathal Lombard Solicitors sponsored awards across three separate categories: Youth, Adult Sport and Club Person.

“The decision two years ago to expand the remit of the awards beyond Mallow town proved to be an inspired one, resulting in huge interest from across the wider North Cork region, breathing fresh life into the whole initiative,” said Roisin.

“We are once again calling on the people in Mourneabbey, Kilshannig, Ballyclough, Buttevant, Doneraile and Killavullen to nominate the unsung heroes they believe are worthy of recognition for their hard work and achievements that inspire those around them and make their communities such great places to live and work in,” she added.

Nomination forms are available online at www. manddsports.com and from committee secretary Neil Sexton at neil_sexton@hotmail.com.

The closing date for receipt of nominations will be Friday, January 27.

Mr Sexton said that he was confident the interests show in the awards in previous years, which resulted in dozens of nominations from across the area, would be replicated this time around.

“I would like to encourage all clubs, schools and volunteer organisations across Mallow and the surrounding area to enter nominations,” said Mr Sexton.

“There is a huge amount of great work being done out there by people and groups, all too often with little or no recognition. That is the very reason why these awards were established, to thank the wonderful people for the wonderful things they do in their communities,” he added.
