BUTTEVANT CELEBRATES ‘NEW’ MAIN STREET WITH FESTIVE BASH

- BILL BROWNE

AFTER more than two-years of roadworks, traffic jams and frustration it was time to celebrate with a clear and unequivocal message – ‘Buttevant is well and truly open for business’.

Last Saturday the town’s Main Street, once dubbed the worst in Ireland, was a hive of activity as locals came together for a festive bash to celebrate the completion of the multi-million euro street scape works.

For as far as the eye could see stalls lined the newly redesigned Main Street, transforming it into a festive winter wonderland as people revelled in the special atmosphere, sampled the goods on offer and enjoyed music, a fireworks display and the switching on of the fantastic Christmas lights display.

Community Council chairman John Lee said the day was a fitting way to herald in a new era in Buttevant’s long history.

“The buzz around the town on Saturday was just brilliant and has helped crate a whole new atmosphere of positivity around the town. The frustration of the past couple of years has now been well and truly consigned to the history books and we are looking to the future with renewed hope and enthusiasm,” said John.

He said the fact that the town could hold an event on this scale without having to close the street was a massive plus.

“It was a great way for people to see all that Buttevant has to offer and to let people know far and wide that the town is back open for business,” said John.
