Ease that Christmas cabin fever and get out for a good cause

- BILL BROWNE

CHRISTMAS would not be Christmas without people taking time off from their celebrations to do something out of the ordinary.

This year is no different, with a number of fun events taking place on Christmas Day and St Stephen’s Day, offering people the chance to burn off any festive excesses in a good cause. The annual Goal Mile fundraiser will return to the beautiful surroundings of Doneraile Park on Christmas morning form 10am -noon

People from across the region are invited to ‘goal that extra mile’ by running, jogging or walking and donating whatever they can afford to the charity.

People can also donate at www. goalglobal.ie.

The Sliabh Luachra/Avondhu Macra annual charity walk will take place on St Stephen’s Day morning at 11.30am from the Old School, Foyle, Ballydesmond to the source of the River Blackwater.

Proceeds from this year’s sponsored walk will go to The Moses Foundation, a charity that raises money to support projects in Uganda and Swaziland.

For more information visits the Sliabh Luachra Macra Facebook page.

Members of the Mallow Search and Rescue Unit will brave the frigid waters of the River Blackwater on Christmas morning for their festive fundraising swim.

People are invited to join club members for the swim, which will take place at 10.30am from the Ten Arches down to Mallow.

Spectators are invited to come along, enjoy the fun and donate to the collection buckets that will be passed around. All monies raised will be donated to the Mallow branch of the Alzheimer’s Society of Ireland.

On St Stephen’s morning members of the Fermoy based Blackwater Sub Aqua club will hold their annual fundraising ‘Fin swim’, meeting at the club house on Rathealy Road at 10am.

As in previous years the event will be staggered, with some of the group swimming the six-miles from Ballyhooley Bridge to Fermoy and the remainder starting from Castlehyde.

All monies raised through the sponsored event will go towards maintaining and upgrading the club’s Search and Rescue operation over the next 12-months.

Club members or supporters who would like to take part in the swim or help with the logistics can contact Kenneth Barry 086 101 8424.

They will not be the only one’s taking to the Blackwater in Fermoy on St Stephen’s Day, with the local Rowing Club set to host their annual get-together from 10.30am.

Current and former members and friends of the club are invited to come along and join in the fun, with races taking place on the river and an informal get together and ‘sing-song’ in the clubhouse afterwards.

The Fermoy GAA Club will hold their Pac Fada competition from 11am on St Stephen’s Day with members of the juvenile and senior clubs invited to take part.

The long puck will take place from the Amber Service station towards Kilcrumper.

Entry will be €5, with all monies raised going to the juvenile club.
