London honours Newmarket native
DUHALLOW WAS WELL REPRESENTED
OVER 200 people attended the 64th London Cork dinner last weekend where a Newmarket native was presented with the Person of the Year award.
Mary Wood (O’Neill) of Newmarket has been the honorary secretary of the Cork Association, London for many years and one of the hardest tasks by the organisers was keeping the surprise under wraps until the night of the awards.
Cllr John Paul O’Shea (Ind) attended the event on behalf of the Mayor of Cork County, Cllr Seamus McGrath (FF).
The annual bash was held at the Clayton Moral Hotel in Cricklewood where over 200 Corkonians were joined by friends and representatives from other county associations for a most enjoyable night.
At the London Cork Dinner were Bill Taylor, Chairman Cork Association, Mary Wood, Hon. Secretary with her Person of the Year Award and the Mayor of Cork County, Cllr. John Paul O’Shea
The special guest of honour was Doireann O’ Sullivan of Mourneabbey representing the victorious Cork Ladies Football Team in the All – Ireland Final with the Brendan Martin, TG4 Trophy.
In proposing the toast to Cork, Cllr John Paul O’ Shea said he was well aware of the workings of the Association who he said playing a prominent role in bringing Cork people together in the UK capital over the years. He thanked the Association and all present for a wonderful reception. ,
Replying to the Honourable guests, the Chairman Bill Taylor from Mallow thanked everyone who made the night a success.
Everyone was welcomed by the President of the Association Michael McCarthy of Bantry and his wife Andrea. Words of appreciation on the night also wen tto the Taylor family of Mallow and the Shorten family in Dunmanway and the very popular Edward O’ Keeffe of Skibereen and his wife Julie.
Other guests who travelled over for the occasion included: Tony and Delia Barrett of Millstreet; Kathleen O’ Riordan of Kilbrin; Pat, Helen and Joanne McGrath of Araglen and Geoff O’Sullivan of Cullen. In addition, Mike Murphy of Freemount and Karina Naughton (O’Neill) and her husband Eddie of Mitchelstown along with Niamh Kelly of Mitchelstown.
