Club invites you to ‘try a dive’ in the New Year

- BILL BROWNE

PULITZER Prize winning writer Dave Barry once famously summed up the allure of scuba diving in a quote that anyone who has ever donned a wet suit will readily understand.

“There’s nothing wrong with enjoying looking at the surface of the ocean itself, except that when you finally see what goes on underwater, you realise that you’ve been missing the whole point of the ocean,” he wrote.

“Staying on the surface all the time is like going to the circus and staring at the outside of the tent.”

With this in mind the Fermoy based Blackwater Sub Aqua Club (SAC) has issued an open invitation to members of the public to take on a new challenge for the New Year by joining their ranks.

The club has announced it will host a ‘ Try a Dive’ event on Wednesday, February 1, offering people the chance to find out more about the club and experience the thrill of diving.

Club secretary Kenneth Barry said joining would open up a whole new world of experiences for fledgling members.

“This is the perfect opportunity for anyone who may have considered taking up scuba diving, but don’t know where to start,” said Mr Barry.

“Members get the opportunity to enjoy sea and river life, explore wrecks and take scenic dives in Cork Harbour and farther afield,” he added.

Under the ‘ Try a Dive’ initiative officials will host an open information session at their clubhouse on the Rathealy Road giving details of the training course, before heading to the local swimming pool to give applicants an experience of diving.

The course is open to beginners and those with previous diving experience over the age of 16.
