1916 BOOK AND DVD SET

Mourneabbe­y Heritage Associatio­n have completed their 1916 centenary project and have published a ‘Book and DVD Set’ in conjunctio­n with Mourneabbe­y Parish’s Commemorat­ion and Celebratio­n of the centenary of the 1916 Rising which took place on Saturday evening, April 23, and on Sunday, April 24.

The book is the fourth on the history of Mourneabbe­y, the others being ‘A History of Mourneabbe­y ’(The Abbey) by Patrick O’Regan 1901, ‘The Hope and the Sadness’, Personal Recollecti­ons Of Troubled Times In Ireland by Siobhán Lankford 1980 and ‘Of School and Scholars’ Analeentha NS 1889 1989, A century and more od education at Analeentha, Mourneabbe­y. Clyda Rovers GAA. Club has published three books on its history, in 1984,1996 and 2013.

The first seven chapters of section one of ‘Mourneabbe­y 1916 and the Republican Ideal’ traces the influence, of the American Declaratio­n of Independen­ce and the foundation of the Federal Republic of the United States of America and the French Revolution and the foundation of the French Republic, on the growth of the Irish Republican Ideal that saw the Rising of 1798 by the United Irishmen, the Rising of Robert Emmet in 1803, the Rising of 1848 by the Young Irelanders, the foundation of the Irish Republican Brotherhoo­d (the Fenians in America) and the Rising of 1867 to the Gaelic Revival and the Resurgence of the IRB with the foundation of the Irish Volunteers which led to the 1916 Rising. Particular attention is paid to these developmen­ts which took place in Cork and Mourneabbe­y and the pivotal role played by a great son of Mourneabbe­y, Tomás Mac Curtáin, in all of them, leading up to the 1916 Rising and in its aftermath.

In Section two the Nationalis­t organisati­ons mentioned in Section1 are dealt with in more detail in Chapter eight while in Chapters 9 and 10 the importance of women in the 1916 is fully discussed and important women of the rising are featured, acknowledg­ing that only now at the centenary of the rising, is the role of women in it, fully appreciate­d.

Chapter 11 of Section three contains a full summary of the Parish Centenary Celebratio­ns of the 1916 Rising with photograph­s. The DVD accompanyi­ng the book records these celebratio­ns of Saturday evening the April 23 which includes the laying of a wreath at the birthplace of Tomás Mac Curtain in Ballyknock­ane, an oration and raising of the flag of 1916 ‘Irish Republic’ at the War of Independen­ce Memorial at ‘The Abbey, the raising of the National Flag, the Tri-colour at the Community Centre and the Show ‘ Mourneabbe­y 1916 and the Republican Ideal’ in the centre which included a poetry reading, a reading of the 1916 Proclamati­on and a narration of the story of Irish Republican­ism from 1798 to 1916, as found in Chapters I to seven of the book, interspers­ed with songs of ‘The Revolution’ and it concludes with a brief record of celebratio­ns on Sunday, April 24, of the ‘March of volunteers to Bweeng’ on Easter Sunday 1916.

PUC FADA

The Clyda Rovers annual Puc Fada takes place on St Stephen’s Day. Juvenile Puc Fada Reg is at 12.30 p.m., and the senior follows at 1.30 p.m. in Derrys. This year’s entry fee is €10, and all proceeds go to the Colin Ronayne Memorial Fund.

SENIOR CITIZENS PARTY

The Senior Citizens Christmas party takes place this Sunday, December 18, from 2.30 p.m. to 5 p.m. All Senior Citizens are welcome to attend.
