Fermoy handballer­s win five juvenile county titles

MALLOW Credit Union sponsored 40x20 County Juvenile championsh­ip finals drew a capacity crowd to Mallow handball court on Saturday and Sunday as players from seven clubs battled for honours in the different age group singles and doubles.

For Fermoy club it proved to be a very successful weekend they won five of the sixteen juvenile titles on offer and in so doing lifted the Mallow Credit Union Perpetual Shield which goes annually to the most successful club in the championsh­ip. Fermoy have some very promising young players in their ranks at the moment and they again impressed on Saturday and Sunday with some excellent displays from their young players which ensured the title was on its way to Fermoy. It was a close battle all the way as Ballydesmo­nd who finished with four titles and Boherbue with three were always within striking distance. It also proved to be a good championsh­ip for Conna they took two titles and were narrowly beaten in a few more finals, some of their young players who lost out narrowly are making progress and will have learned a lot from this years campaign. Mallow and Liscarroll completed the roll of honour with one title each. Tom Cronin, on behalf of Mallow Credit Union, presented the winners and runners-up medals to the players and presented Mallow Credit Union Shield to Fermoy club to bring the curtain down on a very successful weekend of handball with credit to host club Mallow for their very profession­al handling of such a big programme of finals over the two days.

The County 40x20 programme is narrowing down most grades are now completed, Further progress will be made during coming week. On this Thursday at Mallow 7.30 start Masters A Doubles Final is down for decision with John Herlihy, St Finbarrs and John Hedigan, Liscarroll due to play the Ballydesmo­nd / Liscarroll partnershi­p of Denis Quinn and Ger Healy, over the weekend the first rounds of Senior Doubles will be decided, Senior Singles start later in the month with both Novice A and Novice B scheduled to commence first week of February.

On Sunday next Cumman na mBunscoil trials will be played at Mallow and Liscarroll both venues commencing at 12 noon to select Cork team for Munster competitio­ns which caters for boys and girls in U-11 and U-13 age groups who are still attending Primary School. Munster Finals are scheduled for Limerick venues Broadford and Cappagh on February 12.

Players to represent Cork in 40x20 Munster Colleges championsh­ip are also being finalised with a series of trials some grades in both boys and girls are already decided with the remainder of trials to be played off during coming week. The 40x20 Munster championsh­ip fixtures will be issued later this week with first round games scheduled for January 20. Players to represent Cork have all been finalised there is a strong line up involved and we will be hoping for a good run in the provincial championsh­ip.
