Everyman Palace unveils busy schedule as the grand old venue marks 120 years

- BILL BROWNE

THE Everyman Palace Theatre is set to celebrate 120-years of entertaining audiences with a packed spring/summer programme of events that will appeal to all ages and tastes.

At the unveiling of the busy and varied schedule for the coming months on Tuesday night a delighted Everyman executive director Séan Kelly said it contained “something for everyone”.

“Following on from our record-breaking panto, we enter 2017 more optimistic than ever. Once again, the Everyman is presenting a high-quality, eclectic programme that we believe our audiences will love and which you quite simply will not find anywhere else,” said Mr Kelly.

“There really is something for everyone and we can’t wait for the new season to get underway.”

To mark what is a special year for the venue, the theatre will host a series special monthly ‘Everyman120’ shows, events that its artistic director Julie Kelleher said would “encapsulate the best of the building’s past, present or future as we continue our mission of maintaining tradition and breaking new ground.”

These will include the première of Cork writer Kevin Barry’s first stage play ‘Autumn Royal’, an operatic reinvention of James Joyce’s ‘ The Dead’, a witty re-imagining of Willy Russell’s classic comedy ‘Educating Rita’, a production of John B Keane’s ‘Many Young Men of Twenty’, Handel’s classic opera ‘Radamisto’ and the Irish première of ‘Futureproof by Cork playwright Lynda Radley.

In keeping with the tradition of supporting local talent the Everyman will continue to present the work of Cork’s leading theatre artists. These will include Declan Hassett’s new play ‘Jack’ about the life and times for former Taoiseach Jack Lynch, the Broken Crow Theatre Company’s play ‘Levin & Levin’ written by Aideen Wylde and West End star Irene Warren in a production of Lloyd Webber’s ‘ Tell Me On A Sunday’, directed by Trevor Ryan.

Comedy will be in great supply over the coming months with Cork’s own Ross Browne, Des Bishop, Jason Byrne, Foil, Arms & Hog, David McSavage, PJ Gallagher and Al Murray all set to grace the stage of the grand old venue.

The musical line-up is equally impressive with Johnny McEvoy, The Cavern Beatles and The White Horse Guitar Club giving just a flavour of the talent on offer.

Other programme highlights will include a stage adaptation of Maeve Binchy’s novel ‘Minding Frankie’, a new play from Eoin Colfer and touring shows such as Brokentalkers ‘Have I No Mouth’, Jim Nolan’s excellent ‘Johnny I Hardly Knew Ye’ and the Dublin-based THEATREclub’s ‘ The Game’.

“By way of acknowledging the rich and varied performance history of the building, we have put together a full programme for the year that will bring you the very best of the performing arts,” promised Ms Kelleher.
