Mallow students invited to make their own piece of history

- BILL BROWNE

PUPILS from the three secondary schools in Mallow have been invited to take part in an initiative that it is hoped will help preserve the memory of one of the town’s most celebrated sons for generations to come.

Next month a month-long exhibition organised by the Heritage Committee of the Mallow Development Partnership (MDP) celebrating the life and career the late US politician Tip O’Neill and his strong links to Ireland, Cork and in particular Mallow, will open at the Cork City Library.

To coincide with the exhibition, the MDP has announced details of the aptly named ‘ Tip O’Neill Competition’, for which they have invited TY pupils from Mallow schools to create their own little piece of local history.

Heritage Committee spokesman Michael O’Neill said participants will be asked to submit original pieces in one of three separate categories.

“Students are invited to compose a poem or short story on Tip O’Neill or draw a picture of a local historic site such as Tip O’Neill Park, Mallow Castle or The Clock House,” said Mr O’Neill.

“There will be awards for the winner of each category and it is hoped that, providing space is available, their entries will be put on display as part of the Tip O’Neill exhibition,” he added.

Mr O’Neill said that with the passing of the years it was more important now than ever that the memory of the late Tip O’Neill, his incredible legacy and his close links to Mallow were kept alive.

“Tip was a man who throughout his life made no secret of the fact that he was incredibly proud of his Mallow roots, something that has always been a great source of pride to the people of Mallow,” he said.

“The aim of this competition is twofold. Firstly to ensure that Tip O’Neill’s legacy is passed on through the generations and secondly to encourage the young people of Mallow to take notice of, and take pride in, the vibrant heritage that surrounds them,” he added.

Details of the competition have been sent to the secondary schools and entries must be returned to the MP on or before the closing date of Tuesday, February 28.
