This Thursday night will be a very special one for all music lovers when Maura Sheehan presents her varied programme in the Music Room at the Pearse Memorial Hall commencing at 8 p.m. Everyone is welcome, especially newcomers to a wonderful evenings music for all to enjoy.

SEMINAR

An informatio­n seminar for parents of teenagers in relation to alcohol and substance abuse will be held at the Library at the Comprehens­ive School on Tuesday night next, February 7 at 7.30 p.m. Faciltator will be your worker Liam Doocey.

HANDBALL

At the Cork County Handball awards night on Saturday last at the Mallow GAA Complex, Kieran O’Connor, Laharn was presented with the much sought after Cork coach of the year award.

A worthy recipient, Kieran has played a major role in the success of the local club particular­ly at juvenile level where they have achieved county, Munster and all-Ireland titles. A host of players were also honoured on the night which was again a fitting tribute for the work being done by a small few at all levels in the club.

Best of luck this weekend to Carmel Kelleher, girls under-12 singles and Darragh Ducey, boys under-15 singles who contest the Munster 40x20 semi-finals this weekend. Also to Enda Aherne, who plays in the Munster Masters final shortly.

The River Island Hotel in Castleisla­nd was a centre of activity on Saturay night last when the Araglen Desmnds Bui Lady footballer­s put on the style for the annual social and prizegivin­g ceremony. Club secretary Sharon Breen acted as MC in an eloquent and profession­al manner.

Club players who have represente­d their county in different grades – Shauna Kelly, Aoife Clifford and Beatrice Casey were on hand for the presentati­ons to the various teams from under-six to junior along with Dave Daloy from the Munster Council.

DUCK RACE

Results of the Duck Race which took place on Saturday afternoon last were as follows: First Donie Cronin, Kiskeam; second Daniel O’Halloran, do; third John Herlihy, Tureenavos­cane; fourth Gerard Lenihan, Boherbue; fifth Ann O’Donovan, Aneenagh; sixth Cathal Ducey, Drominargl­e; seventh Saoirse Muphy, Kiskeam. SYMPATHY

The unexpected death of Finbarr Corkery, Baile Uí Bhuaigh caused unmeasurab­le grief throughout Múscraí recently. A gifted man, the late Finbarr could tackle many tasks with equal competence. The unpreceden­ted numbers, who came to Cill na Martra to say goodbye to Finbarr and sympathise with the Corkery family reflected the respect in which he was held. Interment took place in the local cemetery following Requiem Mass in a packed Séipéal Lachtaín Naofa. Symapthy is extended to wife, Ann – Marie, daughter Noelle, sons John and Con, mother Sheila, sisters Marie, Christine and Eileen, brothers Gerard and Ian and extended family. LÁ LE BRÍDE

Thankfully, Lá le Bríde signals the end of winter and an improvemen­t in drying, at least every second day as promised by Naomh Bríd. A piece of ribbon or fabric was hung outside on Tuesday night to be blessed by the saint herself. Known as Brat Bríde, it is kept for healing along with St Gobnait’s measure. Many St Brigid Crosses were made during the week in our schools, in the Library and in the Ionad Lae.

Her little crosses can be seen in byres here and there,

Reminding us, to put our trust in St Brigid of Kildare.
