LADIES CELEBRATE: Araglen Desmonds Buí, Newtown and Banteer
NEWTOWNSHANDRUM camogie and GAA clubs combined to celebrate their respective successes on the field of play last season in a victory social at the Charleville Park Hotel on last Saturday night.
The ladies of the camogie team were commemorating their Cork County Junior ‘A’ Championship victory over Na Piarsaig in the final, while their counterparts in the GAA club toasted their winning of the North Cork Junior ‘C’ Hurling Championship.
The girls of the camogie club, led by their captain, recalled their campaign in the championship in which they didn’t have an auspicious start as they went down to Na Pairsaig in the first round. However, they made amends and this was the last time they tasted defeat as they went on to record victories over Bride Rovers, Bishopstown and St. Vincent’s in the semi-final.
They got sweet revenge in the final when they met up with Na Piarsaig again and this time the North Cork side came out on top in the game that was played at Castle Road, in Blackrock, Cork.
Their 23 strong panel, along with their management team of Mark Farrell, Brendan O’Connor and Garry Morrissey and club chairperson Mary Collins, were celebrating their win and, as a result, their elevation to the intermediate level of competition.
Among the attendance were the members of the Mortgage Contribution Team, who are leading the drive to clear the Newtownshandrum club’s outstanding debt on their playing fields and other facilities. The members, Mike Collins (087-2254886), Ian Minihane (87-6363762), Jim Curtin (087-8555985), Roy Finucane (0872451134), Donal Mulcahy (6691652) and Des O’Neill (087-9583502) who would like to hear from anybody who wishes to make a contribution to the fund raising effort to defray the debt.
