-

THE Newmarket Intermediate footballers qualified for the Tom Creedon Cup semi-final with a 0-16 to 1-5 victory over Kinsale at Newmarket on Saturday last.

The locals were first into attack with points from TJ Brosnan, Daniel Cullotty (2), Donal Hannon and Timmy ( Wimpy) Murphy to lead 0-5 to nil after seven minutes. Gearoid Finn replied for the visitors with points in the 10th and 12th minutes. Daniel Cullotty kicked over his third point from a Donal Hannon pass in the 14th minute, with Gavin Ford nipping up from defence to give Newmarket its eighth point of the game. In this period Newmarket had chances of goals but unfortunately did not avail of them. However, Gearoid Finn found the net for Kinsale in the 24th minute with a low shot. He followed up in the 25th and 28th minutes with points.

Timmy Murphy closed the first half scoring with a superb point from all of 45 metres out to leave the locals leading 0-9 to 1-4 at the interval. The second half saw Newmarket play down to the town end against the breeze. It was a half completely dominated by the locals, with points from Cullotty (4), John Ryan, TJ Brosnan and Michael Kenneally, to which that man again, Gearoid Finn, sent over a Kinsale point from a free in the 29th minute to leave the final score 0-16 to 1-5 in favour of the impressive black and red brigade.
