MALLOWGEARS UP FOR AWARDS
THE volume of nominations for the 2016 Mallow and District Sports and Leisure Awards has exceeded all expectations with more than 70 entries across both categories.
Awards committee spokesperson Roisin Moriarty said the increase is a direct result of the decision taken two years ago to widen the geographical remit of the awards beyond Mallow town.
“This has meant that more schools and clubs from around the wider Mallow area have been eligible to send in nominations. We are delighted with the response, with the number of nominations once again up on the previous year,” said a delighted Roisin.
“The standard of entry is exceptionally high and the judging panel will most definitely have their work cut out when it comes down to picking the winners,” she said.
The identities of the youth award nominees will be unveiled at a reception taking place in the AIB, Mallow branch next Monday evening.
The adult nominees will revealed at an event in The Corkman offices the following Monday evening.
“All nominees will be contacted over the coming days with details of both receptions,” said Roisin.
The winners will be presented with their awards at a glittering bash dubbed the ‘Mallow Oscars’ taking place in the Springfort Hall Hotel on Saturday, March 3. Guests of honour for the night will be World Champion and Olympic bronze medal winning race walker Rob Heffernan.
Two special awards, the recipients of which have been chosen by the organising committee, will also be presented on the night.
The Hall of Fame award will be presented to Sean Ryan, with the Community Ward going to the Sean Moylan Park Residents Association.
Tickets for the awards ceremony will be available at both receptions priced at €40.
