The Corkman

Exciting year in store at Mallow Library

-

CORK County Library staff are openly declaring themselves to be hooked on books this year.

Furthermore, they are inviting the population of County Cork to join them in their addiction.

The love of reading is a great pleasure and an addition to anyone’s life and the benefits multiply when the pleasure is shared. The many book clubs around the county give testament to this joy, and Cork County Library’s online book club, which was launched on Facebook late last year, has proved very popular.

The library service hopes in 2017 to highlight books and reading through a series of promotions and events which will not only showcase the printed work for all ages but also the various new formats now freely available at the library. These include audio books on cd and online resources such as e-books, e-magazines and language learning.

It is also anticipated that the library’s huge collection of literature, both fact and fiction, will be highlighted throughout the year.

The Local Studies library will compile an exhibition celebrating the centenary of the founding of Henry Ford & Sons Ltd, in Cork in 1917. The library holds a collection of books and newspapers covering the history of the plant and of the Ford family. Included in the collections are materials from the 75th anniversary, which will also be included.

The Local Studies hope to compile a number of one to two board mini exhibitions throughout the year on topics such as “The Manchester Martyrs”, “John F Kennedy”, “Jack Lynch” (all centenary commemorations). The events will include a series of literary events/author visits throughout the County.

It is hoped to have a good mix of genre and subject, something to interest everyone.

Poetry Day in April proves ever popular and it is hoped that this year library customers will again participate with enthusiasm.

International Women’s Day 2017 will be celebrated by an event hosting a well-known female author discussing her work and a talk by a HSE psychologist on good mental health.

Dramatisation of books is also being explored with possible events in a few branches in different areas.

The forthcoming Space Studies Programme in CIT will give the service an opportunity to liaise once again with Blackrock Observatory and CIT to enable librarians to highlight the modern collection of accessible science books, and to bring the public a number of astronomy related events.

Children will, of course, have their own programme which will include author visits, crafts, workshops and bookclubs in many branches. Story telling is always popular and many staff have trained in storytelling and continue to do great work in that area, becoming ever more inventive and innovative in enhancing children’s love of stories.

A full programme will be ready in early spring outlining times dates etc. Check the website later in February for more details: www.corkcoco. ie/library.
