Service station jobs boost for Fermoy

- KENNETH KELLEHER

THE Fermoy community received a boost on Monday when it was announced that approximately 330 jobs would be created by the opening of two new service stations, one of which is to be in Fermoy.

Although the exact number of jobs to be created remains a mystery, it is believed that half of the 330 jobs will be created in Fermoy, 50 of these being construction jobs with approximately 70 to 100 jobs being created in employment in the service station, which will be operated by Topaz and will feature a McDonald’s takeaway.

The two companies have announced a joint investment of €16 million in the two service stations, the other being in Carlow, and it is believed that roughly half of that figure will be invested in the Fermoy station. The service station, which is due to open in the autumn, will be operational 24 hours a day and will also encompass a 100sqm retail area, off license, cafe, deli and seating area. There will be in excess of 140 parking spaces available at the service station to include truck parking, coach parking and additional facilities such as ADR parking.

Niall Anderton MD of Topaz said “The routes are the two busiest routes in Ireland, and we are excited to announce this development of two new full-service stations to serve Irish motorists.”

Nigel McGuire, Director of Property and Supply Chain, McDonald’s said “We are delighted to be bringing our world-class food offering to drivers along Ireland’s busy motorway network.” This latest investment from Topaz comes after the company announced they have invested €36.1million in Ireland in the last two years.
