AT a function organised by the juvenile committee of Athletics Ireland, Ciara Sheehy was presented with an award for being the best Cork juvenile athlete in the All-Ireland Championship in 2016. The function took place at the Tullamore Court Hotel, Tullamore, Co Offaly. It was in Tullamore that she clinched her place as the top Cork athlete, winning gold in the shot put, gold in the discus and silver in the hammer, having already won gold in the indoor shot at Athlone earlier in the year.

Ciara is 14 years of age and is currently a second year student at St Marys, Charleville.

She is the first club athlete to win an award at this level, and we in Liscarroll AC are very proud of her achievement. The presentation was made by AAI president Georgina Drumm and Kerry O’Flaherty, Newcastle, Co Down. Well done Ciara.

Ciara will be in action at the Munster Indoor Championships on next Sunday, Feb 26.

TRAINING

Tomorrow Friday at Charleville for those not going to Nenagh at 6.30pm.

Tuesday night at Churchtown 8-9pm. No Little Athletes training tonight Thursday, but back again next week 6.30 to 7.30pm.

WANT TO TRY ATHLETICS

There are many people both young and old who have never tried athletics because they believe that it is only for runners. Yes, there is running involved. There is road running over various distances, there is cross country and track running, but there are many other aspects to athletics.

There are three main jumping events, long, high and triple (which was originally called hop, step and jump). There is pole vault for those who are more adventurous. There are five throwing events, shot put, discus, javelin, hammer and weight for distance.
