Council give Lidl the green light to replace its Mitchelstown store with a new, larger outlet

DECISION ON KANTURK STORE DUE NEXT WEEK

- BILL BROWNE

GERMAN discount giant Lidl is set to expand its Mitchelstown retail operation by replacing its existing store on the Fermoy Road with a larger one on the same site.

This after Cork County Council planners gave the green light to a planning application for the demolition of the existing 1,768 sq metre outlet at Brigown.

Under the provisions of the application this will be replaced by a new 2,680 sq metre mono-pitched licenced discount store with associated infrastructural works ranging in height from one to two storeys.

The new building on the 2.7 acre site will incorporate an expanded 1,424 sq metre retail sales area incorporating an off-licence, bakery lobby, toilets, staff facilities, offices and storage areas on the ground floor.

The upper floor will include an IT room, staff toilets and canteen and roof terrace.

Externally, the plan makes provision for new signage, a trolley bay and parking for 122 cars and 28 cycles and motorcycles.

While the main vehicular and pedestrian entrance to the Fermoy Road site will remain in place, the plan also includes a dedicated new pedestrian access point adjacent to its northern boundary.

While planners ruled the development was in accordance with the “proper planning and sustainable development” of the area, they did impose 16 conditions with the planning approval.

These related to issues such as road and traffic safety, the protection of existing amenities both during and after demolition/construction and noise pollution.

The company was also ordered to pay the sum of €44,660.62 under the council’s Development Contribution Scheme towards the cost of chances public infrastructure and facilities in the vicinity of the new development.

Meanwhile, planners are set to deliver their ruling next Monday on a similar application by Lidl for their existing store on the Banteer Road in Kanturk.

If given the go-ahead it will see the demolition of the 1,762 sq metre store and the construction of a new 2,962 sq metre premises.

The new building on the 1.391 hectare site will incorporate a retail sales area with ancillary off-licence and bakery, lobby, toilets, staff facilities, offices and storage areas on the ground floor.

The upper floor will include additional storage areas, an IT room, staff canteen and roof terrace.

Externally, the application makes provision for signage, a trolley bay and parking for 144 cars and 45 cycles and motorcycles.

The plan also makes provision for a repositioned entrance to the new outlet for vehicles and pedestrians on the Banteer Road and landscaping works.
