TROLLEY DASH GANG COME OUT UNSTUCK

- MARIA HERLIHY

ONLY the best would do for a gang who walked into a Newmarket supermarket, loaded a trolley with €2,000 worth of top shelf whiskey, brandy and manuka honey and coolly wheeled their haul out the door to a waiting getaway car.

Supermarket staff called in the local Gardaí after they realised what had happened and an immediate search was launched for the sweet-toothed thieves.

Gardaí examined CCTV film from both the supermarket and Newmarket’s town camera system and were soon able to issue descriptions of the suspects and their car.

Just one day after the theft, Gardaí arrested three Romanian men last Thursday and all three have since been charged in connection with the incident.

The men were denied bail and are due back in court next week.

THIEVES with expensive tastes loaded a supermarket trolley with €2,000 worth of manuka honey and top shelf whiskey and VSOP brandy and cooly walked out the door to a waiting getaway car.

A senior Garda source told The Corkman that two men entered Supervalu in Newmarket on Wednesday, March 1, with a trolley and “loaded it up” with “Manuka honey, whiskey and very expensive brandy” and walked out the door to a car where a third man was waiting.

Gardai were alerted and they viewed CCTV footage from the shop. They also viewed footage from the high-end CCTV system in the town, which the Garda described as “invaluable” in conducting investigations.

An alert was issued for the car registration number and Gardaí sent out a photo description of those allegedly involved. On Thursday, March 2, a car carrying three Romanian men was stopped at Tullig, Millstreet, by investigating Gardai. All three were arrested and two were brought to Macroom Garda station and one was brought to Mallow Garda station for questioning.

At Fermoy District Court on Friday last, two men were charged with theft of €2,000 worth of Manuka honey, whiskey and brandy from Super Valu in Newmarket and a third man was charged with handling stolen property, which again was Manuka honey.

At that sitting, the trio were refused bail and are due back to court next week.

It is understood that Gardai have so far recovered up to 60 jars of Manuka honey.

A senior Garda praised the CCTV system in Newmarket town, saying it has greatly helped their investigations into a number of recent incidents.
