Moylan Park are big winners
THERE were smiles all round at table which sat the Sean Moylan Park Residents Association who were the Community Award winners at the Mallow and District Sports and Leisure Council awards.
The award was sponsored by The Corkman and Cathal Lombard Solicitors.
The excellent MC, Kieran McSweeney said Sean Moylan Park, the 84 house-estate was built in the early 1960s being the first of many new developments to grow in the outskirts of Mallow Town centre.
Many large families from around town, who were for many years on the council housing list, moved from small living quarters to their larger and much more modern homes. The Griffin and Gorey families from Fair Street, moved South as did the Roche family from Lisheen Row as well as many other large families who made their home on the new estate.
At the top of Sean Moylan Park two industrial outlets created much employment for the area in the form of Mallow industries which set up business in the early 1960s and Mica Micanite later in the decade.
Four houses at the top of the estate were allotted to Mallow Industry employees including the Kellys, O’Keeffes, McArees and Donnelly’s who moved from various parts of the country to Mallow. Two of the famous Fair Street Buckley boxing brothers, JJ and Paddy lived with their families in Sean Moylan Park until their passing some years ago.
He said over the past 56 years, Sean Moylan Park has been renowned as a close-knit community who have bonded together to organise many events.
In recent years, the Residents Association have been a hard-working group in maintaining the greens in the estate by producing picturesque and colourful flower beds which are admired by so many.
The Sean Moylan Park Residents Association also organise a family day which is steeped in much activity including sports for children and adults, while resident DJ Michael Griffin spins pop classics.
The Residents Association are very honoured and proud to receive a Community Award and know in their heart and soul that the future generations of Sean Moylan Park families will continue to strive to make the estate a community to always be very proud to be associated with.
Addressing the crowd, Jerry O’Sullivan of the Sean Moylan Park Residents Association thanked everyone in the association who always puts their shoulder to the wheel.
He said money is collected from each street for the upkeep of the area. He also said Sean Moylan Park is a great place to live in and a great place to grow up in.
