Social media and Internet safety informatio­n evening for parents

TUSLA – the Child and Family Agency Child and Family Support Network - in the Mitchelsto­wn/Fermoy area is hosting a free informatio­n evening for parents on social media and internet safety – ‘what parents need to know’.

It’s on this Thursday, March 9 at 7.30pm in the youth centre, Fermoy. The event is free of charge and there is no need to register in advance.

Speakers on the night will include forensic psychologi­st Dr. Maureen Griffin, Director of MGMS Training and Irene Gueden, Digital Safety Programme Co-ordinator from Intel Security. Key areas being discussed will include:

· What is currently popular among Irish students;

· The potential dangers of online activity and practical advice to help parents protect children online;

· Social networking sites, social messaging apps

· Video streaming sites;

· Searching online;

· Mobile device safety;

· Sexting and cyber bullying.

Speaking ahead of the event, Caríosa Lynch, Senior Community Developmen­t Worker, Tusla, said: “We’ve been informed through our local Child and Family Support Network that parents in Mitchelsto­wn and Fermoy want to know more about social media and internet safety and how to protect their children. This event is the start of a process which will help families in the community to access the informatio­n and support they need.

“This event will be followed up by a four week course on internet safety provided by Cork ETB in Fermoy.

“This is open to all parents and those wishing to do the course can contact Fermoy ETB directly.”

Sadie Allen, Developmen­t Officer at Ballyhoura Developmen­t said: “As profession­als on the ground working closely with families we are acutely aware of the challenges faced by families and we are committed to informing and supporting families to meet these challenges by working collaborat­ively through the Tusla Child and Family Support Network in Mitchelsto­wn and Fermoy.”
