RONNIE WHELAN AND RAY HOUGHTON TO HOLD A QUESTION AND ANSWER SESSION IN KANTURK

- MARIA HERLIHY

THERE will be a trip down memory lane in Kanturk as soccer fans relive the glory days of the Boys in Green and the Reds of Liverpool in the form of the mighty Ronnie Whelan and Ray Houghton.

The Duhallow Supporters Club knew the high regard the people hold for both pundits and when the chance presented itself to host an evening with the pair – it was an open goal. Planning began in early January for the event which will be held on Friday, May 12 at the Edel Quinn Hall.

Derek Carroll of the Duhallow Supporters Club told The Corkman that the dream of having both Ray Houghton and Ronnie Whelan was in the pipeline for many years. Contact was made with Alan Keoghan who would be a huge link to soccer players.

“Alan really got the ball rolling for us and we are thrilled that these two greats will be in Kanturk in May. It will be a fantastic night,” he said.

The Supporter’s Club which has been in existence for the past decade have also very kindly decided that the profits from their night in May will go to Marymount Hospice.

The Duhallow Supporters Club has itself lost members in the past due to ilness and Marymount was there as it always has been to help not only the seriously ill person but equally so their loved ones.

On Friday, May 12, both Ronnie and Ray will sit down for an evening of discussion where their careers will be charted from the famed turf of Home Farm and Glasgow to the lights of Stuggart in 1988 and Giants Stadium in 1994 and it can be expected that on question to be asked will be: ‘Who did put the ball in the English net?’. And does Ronnie still has the shinguard from his Russia goal in Euro 1988?

The heroes will also delve into their hugely successful Liverpool stints where winning became the norm as the Merseyside giants entered a purple patch of trophy success.

Both will also be surely asked of the state of the national team as they look to attend the World Cup in Russia and where Liverpool can improve again for next season under Jurgen Klopp.

Also, making a special guest appearance on the night, will be the Champions League Trophy or “Old Big Ears” as he is endearingly known to the Liverpool supporters. Fans will get the opportunity to have their photo taken with the cup and guests will also get the chance to pen their own questions for the former greats during the show.

All in all, it promises to be a great night of nostalgia and wit, as the colourful characters will get to regale the audience with their many tall tales and anecdotes of yesteryear, and attempt to foresee what the future holds for the Boys in Green and Liverpool. A night not to be missed for any soccer fan.

Tickets cost Adult €20 / Student or Oap €15 and can be obtained from Derek Carroll (087 6901098), Brian Enright (087 2316406), Charles Anketell (087 7793205) or Brendan Harrington (087 9829782) or any member of the Duhallow Supporter’s Club.

The doors at the Edel Quinn Hall will open at 7pm and the Ronnie Whelan and Ray Houghton will be on stage at 8pm sharp.
