Back to back Clara Hill Run titles for Deane

-

CLONAKILTY Road Runners’ Paul Deane completed back to back wins to the Clara Hill Run in Millstreet last Sunday evening.

Deane got into his stride on the downward trek that proved good enough to ward off the challenge of a representative field. On doing so, the West Cork hopeful sampled success again over the demanding North Cork course, delivering an impressive showing that’s sure to boost his confidence ahead of upcoming tests.

The Irish Mountain Running Association operated the latest series of its Spring League on a highly successful visit to Millstreet for the popular staging under the co-ordination of Duhallow AC over the 6.2-mile route.

The staging offered indications of inform athletes looking ahead to representing Ireland in the Slovenian staging to the European Championship in July and the World Championship in Italy later in the summer with the equivalent Masters scheduled the autumn.

Deane joined by Tom Blackburn (Moore Abbey Milers), Brian Mullins, local native Donal Coffey (St. Finbarrs) and Cork senior football panellist John McLoughlin led the upward march in a compact group by the 352m summit. On the downward circuit, Deane emphasised his dominance to pull away and cross the finish line in 32 minutes 53 seconds, 22 seconds ahead of the fast finishing Blackburn and Mullins placed third.

The Clon clubman enjoys participating in the Munster Hill Running League ahead of formidable challenges over Mangerton, Galtees and Carrantuohill.

Mallow’s Ide Kelleher took the senior ladies honours from Kealey Tideswell (Clonmel) and Debbie McCarthy (Riverstick Kinsale).

Duhallow AC co-ordinator Donie Shine and Race Director Joan Ryan of the Munster Hill Running Association applauded the participation of entries and spoke of the growing interest within the sport.

“Athletes enjoy participating in Millstreet, the largest entry for a long number of years, the Duhallow club having significant numbers,” said Donie.
