Macroom B collect President’s award

-

MACROOM B captured the President’s Cup at Turner’s Cross last week, following a brilliant 2-1 victory over Temple Utd. Sean Quinn was the ace marksman with two stunning goals ensuring that the cup returned to Macroom for the first time since 2007.

On a perfect night for football and on a beautiful surface, Macroom began brightly. Forward trio Jack O’Donovan, Mark Corrigan and Quinn were causing huge problems for the Temple defence. After a few close calls, Macroom went ahead on 22 minutes. Barry Kelleher won a great header which fell to Quinn. His first time volley from the edge of the box scorched into the top corner. Temple came more into the game for the remainder of the half but the Macroom defence of O’Huidir, O’Callaghan, Deasy and Cullinane dealt comfortably with anything that came their way. Macroom deservedly led 1-0 at half time.

The Northside club improved big time in the second period. And sustained pressure yielded a scrappy equaliser on 56 when Macroom failed to clear a free kick and the ball was stabbed home from close range. Temple continued to push but Macroom held firm with Willie O’Riordan and Jack Cronin putting in great midfield shifts.

The game was evenly balanced entering the final quarter but Macroom’s pacey front three were continuing to do well. Corrigan in particular was causing havoc on the left flank. And it was his run and cross which was expertly met at the back post by Quinn to make it 2-1 on 75.

Andrew Boyle in the Macroom goal made a good save from a long range effort and then he combined with O’Huidir to clear off the line via the post when an equaliser looked certain. Pat Kelleher was introduced to good effect as Macroom saw out the remaining time. And wild celebrations were sparked when the final whistle went.

Kevin O’Mahony of the Cork AUL presented the cup to the captain Barry Kelleher and Sean Quinn was deservedly awarded with the man of the match. It was an outstanding effort from the whole squad and management and gives a great boost to everyone involved with Macroom FC.
