‘Grass Girls’ young entrepreneurs are into national Ireland final

-

STUDENTS from St. Mary’s Secondary School, Charleville will represent North and West Cork in the national final of the Student Enterprise Awards.

St Mary’s students won the regional final of the Cork North and West Schools Enterprise Programme, which was held at the County Hall Cork. The competition is part of the National Student Enterprise Awards in which over 17,000 students from all over Ireland take part each year.

The final will be held at Croke Park on May 3 when the girls, Rachel Lynch, Niamh Kavanagh, Jennifer Moloney and Katie Quirke, will exhibit their mini-company Grass Girls.

Their product is a very novel and innovative idea of gender tags for calves. The tags are transparent stickers which enable farmers to easily distinguish male and female calves at first glance. The high quality transparent stickers may be placed over the number tag on the calf, thus a pink transparent sticker denotes a heifer calf and blue for a bull.

Their very unique and worthwhile idea won them great acclaim in the North Cork Enterprise Regional finals when they competed against over 60 companies and were awarded ‘Best Overall Senior Company in Mallow GAA Complex last month.

The girls received invaluable support from Cormac Tagging, who are one of only two agents in the country involved in tagging. The Grass Girls products are now promoted on their website for their true usefulness and high quality.

All at St. Mary’s Secondary School Charleville are delighted that their TY team will represent Cork County in Croke Park in the national final of the Schools Enterprise Programme. The young students are to be congratulated on their achievement as are their teachers and all involved in the project.
