Under-21 FOOTBALL CHAMPIONSHIP – Clyda Rovers 0-10 Kilshannig 1-11: Clyda Rovers bowed out of the 2017 under-21 football championship after a 1-11 to 0-10 defeat to Kilshannig in Buttevant on Saturday last.

Playing with the aid of a strong wind, Clyda opened the scoring through a Séamus Ronayne ‘45 in the second minute. Kilshannig replied almost immediately, before Clyda really got into their stride with successive scores from Séamus Ronayne, Ben O’Connor and Séamus again. Clyda worked the wind very well during this period. But problems arose when Kilshannig got 1-1 on the break, before Colin Kelly levelled proceedings with a brilliant score on the twenty-minute mark.

Ben O’Connor brilliantly scored while under pressure for Clyda, before Séamus Ronayne squeezed a point over from close range. Jack Phelan finished a great team movement to push Clyda further into the lead, but Kilshannig pulled a score back coming into the break. Leaving the sides Clyda 0-8 to Kilshannig’ s 1-3 at the break. Clyda’s were worthy of their lead but a twopoint advantage was very narrow given the strength of the wind.

Kilshannig enjoyed a much brighter start to the second half with three points in a row to hit the lead on the eighth minute. Séamus Ronayne brilliantly knocked over another ‘45 but it was all Kilshannig as the game entered the final quarter. Matthew McEntee got a much-deserved point for Clyda, but Kilshannig finished stronger with three good scores in the final minutes.

Try as they might Clyda were unable to pierce the Kilshannig defence in the closing minutes. It was hard luck on a hard-working team, shorn of their injured captain Darragh Walsh. The Clyda management team of Tadhg O’Connor, Colie Lane, Brendan Walsh and Billy Mulcahy deserve much credit for their hard work during the season.

Clyda: Gearoid O’Shea, Eamon Doherty, James Buckley, Daniel Fitzpatrick, Ronan Flanagan, Mike Forde, Darragh Buckley, Colin Kelly (0-1), Matthew McEntee (0-1), William Cronin, Séamus Ronayne (0-5, two ‘45s), Jack Phelan (0-1), Conor Roche, Tim Buckley and Ben O’Connor (0-2). Sub: used Adam Walsh.

JUNIOR HURLING LEAGUE – Clyda 2-15 Ballyhooly 3-17: A gallant Clyda team without several regulars went down to Ballyhooly on a score line of Clyda 2-15 to Ballyhooly’s 3-17 in the Avondhu Junior Hurling League last Sunday. In an entertaining game, Ballyhooly led from the first score to the last. Séamus Ronayne did most of Clyda’s scoring in the first half as his side trailed 0-7 to 1-10 at the break.

An improved Clyda were more potent in the second half. Late goals, both cracking efforts from Chris Buckley frees, brought the sides to a near grand stand finish. But Ballyhooly held out to record a deserved 3-17 to 2-15 victory.

Clyda: Gearoid O’Shea, James Fitzgerald, Tim Buckley, Diarmuid Ronayne, Mike Forde, Conor Flanagan, Ollie O’Hanlon, Chris Kenny, Cian O’Sullivan, Séamus Ronayne, Chris Buckley, James Buckley, Séamus Madden, Dan O’Callaghan, Seán O’Connor.
