Mallow student Sinead explores the power of chanting in documentary

-

A YOUNG MAllow woman has produced a documentary on the positive effects of chant music.

Sinead Butler is a 23-year-old recent graduate of Mary Immaculate College, where she studied Media and Communications. She gained much of her exposure to media through her placement in student station Wired FM in Limerick, getting diverse experience in conducting interviews and organising a variety of radio shows.

This experience enabled her to create two radio and film documentaries with one film project premiering at the Belltable Theatre in Limerick. Sinead is currently exploring new media opportunities in which to establish herself in the sector.

Chanting Traditions explores the benefits and power of chant music, and discusses the history and effectiveness of chant. It examines believer’s claims that it can heal and improve a person’s well-being. The programme draws parallels to the Irish tradition of songs being handed down from generation to generation, and how our relationship to the past can enhance a community.

Sinead has praised the positive effects of chant music, describing it as “a way of bringing communities together and allowing them to hang out together.”

She has also said that there are many positive effects of chant music both physically and mentally.

“The vibrations you make can actually relex your body and muscles which in turn relaxes your mind.”

Sinead saw the topic as ideal as it was something that could be explored locally as the popularity of chant music has gone through the roof in recent years.

“I wanted to do something locally and I’d be into spirituality as well so it was a great fit.”

She said it is an area which she like to explore more as it greatly interested her

The programme was produced by Mallow resident Sinead Butler under the guidance of Wired FM’s manager Ray Burke with funding from the Broadcasting Authority of Ireland. Chanting Traditions will be broadcast at 6.30pm on Thursday the 27th of April on 99.9FM in Limerick, or online on www.wiredfm.ie.
