CORK YOUTH BALLET ON POINTE

Firkin Crane will play host to Breaking Pointe, a performanc­e of new works by the Cork Youth Ballet Company on Friday.

Breaking Pointe is a programme of short works by choreograp­hers Patricia Crosbie, Sinead Murphy, Inma Pavon and Robert Foley which will showcase the very best of what young Cork dancers have to answer.

Founded in 2015, the 19 dancers are drawn from amongst the best schools in Ireland including Colaiste Stiofain Naofa dance course, Ballet Theatre Ireland, Cork School of Dance, Lucy French School of Dance and Wolf Dance School.

HERMITAGE GREEN IN CORK FOR ONE NIGHT ONLY

One of Ireland’s most successful folk bands, Hermitage Green, will perform at Ballymoloe Grainstore on Friday night.

Hermitage Green have built a dedicated legion of fans across the globe thanks to their captivatin­g and unforgetta­ble live sets. Their unique arrangemen­t of instrument­s includes the bodhrán, djembe, rhythmic guitar and banjo, setting them apart as truly original Irish musicians.

The band ended the summer of 2016 by playing the main stage at Electric Picnic. On November 4th they played their biggest headline gig to date, selling out The Olympia Theatre in Dublin.

50 YEARS OF MUSIC AT SIRIUS ARTS CENTRE

Declan Sinnott and Vicky Keating will take to the stage at the Sirius Arts Centre on Friday night.

Declan Sinnott has been on the Irish music scene for nearly 50 years. A founding member of Horslips, who created the iconic Italia 90 song Dearg Doom which became the soundtrack for an entire era which symbolised the World Cup all the way up to the Celtic Tiger of the noughties.

The guitarist will be joined by Vicky Keating, who’s powerful voice exudes emotion. They will be performing tracks from their latest album “Window on the World.”

VIEWS FROM A BALCONY AT CORK ARTS THEATRE

Cork Arts Theatre will be playing host to the play Views from a Balcony, the latest short play in their “Views from A..” series.

The series has become extremely popular for it’s unorthodox style and has seen submission­s from as far away as Israel.

This night will feature everything from comedy to drama and everything in between.

The setting for all the short plays is, obviously, a balcony but the locations change from apartments to hotels, hospitals and even a castle. The event runs from tonight until Saturday and early booking is advised.

LAUNCH OF NIALL MCCABE ALBUM AT COUGHLANS

In anticipati­on for the release of his new album, soul artists The Niall McCabe Band will be performing in Coughlans on Friday.

With their genesis on a small Island off the West Coast of Ireland, The Niall McCabe Band have honed a sound that is structured around the convention­s of soul music and, in equal parts, reflects the influence of folk and rock traditions on their performanc­e and writing. The sound? They call it transatlan­tic soul.

The band released their album Part of the Light in March 2014 to critical acclaim. Featured as Radio One’s Album of the Week and played extensivel­y across national radio. The band followed national touring with live performanc­es on The Saturday Night Show and Radio One.

WRITING WORKSHOP AT TRISKEL ARTS CENTRE

Triskel Arts Centre will be the location for a writing workshop with the famed author Paul McVeigh on Friday night.

The acclaimed author will be on hand to help you develop your writing techniques for that book you’ve always wanted to write.

Paul’s debut novel ‘ The Good Son’ became an internatio­nal hit, winning the prestigiou­s Polari Prize and was highlighte­d by The Guardian as one of the best books not to be nominated for a Booker Prize.

If you are looking for feedback, there are few better places to receive it.

THE KING IS BACK AT CORK OPERA HOUSE

The King is back for two nights this weekend at the Cork Opera House as renowned Elvis impersonat­or Ben Portsmouth comes to town Saturday and Sunday.

Ben, a multi talented musician, singer and songwriter, began performing as an Elvis tribute artist in 2005 and has gone on to become one of the most famous tribute acts in the world, performing in large venues throughout the world, including on the David Letterman show in 2013.

Ben will bring his unique style, charisma and 10 piece band to Cork for two nights of good old fashioned rock n roll.

IRISH DANCING AT THE INEC

The World Irish Dance Associatio­n will be in the INEC Killarney on Saturday to present to showcase the latest batch of dancers the world famous group have to offer.

The associatio­n has changed the landscape of Irish dancing, making it viable for dancers to become profession­als and increasing interest in the dance style worldwide.

Irish dancing is an art form that needs to be seen in person to be truly appreciate­d and some of the best dancers in the world will be on hand to showcase it in its finest, most elegant form.

CLASSICAL EVENING WITH LONDON CONCERTANT­E

To celebrate their 25 anniversar­y season, the famed London Concertant­e will be performing at St. Fin Barre’s Cathedral this Saturday night.

The London Concertant­e is one of the most experience­d ensembles in the world and perform about 100 concerts a year for fans all over the world.

The thrilling sounds of Mozart, Vivaldi and Bach will all be performed by an ensemble that boasts some of the best classical performers alive today.

LESSONS FROM THE PAST AT THE GRANARY THEATRE

The Granary Theatre play host to the play ‘ The Resistable Rise of Arturo Ui’ Wednesday night at 8pm.

Set in 1930s Chicago, Arturo Ui and his henchmen capitalise on the opportunit­ies presented by the Great Depression to prey on the vulnerable businessme­n and poor vegetable dealers of the city in order to climb to the top.

The satirical and dark parable on the rise of Hitler is utterly gripping. It exposes how one man can win over the hearts of the many by targeting the few. The themes are as relevant today as when it was first written, as they reflect the populist ideals which are evident in current global politics.
