Mallow greets rugby star Anna with sea of green
FLAGS, posters, and a sea of green jerseys greeted Anna Caplice as she did a whistle stop tour of Mallow schools on Monday morning as part of the Women’s Rugby Cup Trophy Tour.
Anna, a member of the Irish Team and a Mallow native, visited Burnfort National School, St. Mary’s, Scoil Ghobnatan, and Gael Scoil Thomáis Dáibhís where she spoke about her career, answered questions, and posed for photographs with the children.
Visiting the schools in her home town was very special for Anna and indeed she had double cause for celebration because on Sunday she and her team UL Bohemians won the All Ireland League in Athlone.
Anna was asked lots of questions by the excited pupils such as how she got involved in Rugby to begin with; “When I was young, I was obsessed with the Munster Team, I watched them on TV, and went to see them every time I could” she explained, “one day I saw a poster advertising Rugby training sessions here in Mallow, I went along and progressed from there” she said.
Anna told the children how she has been a sports enthusiast from a very young age playing football, soccer, basketball, camogie, and also interested in fishing.
Asked what she eats to keep fit, Anna explained that rugby players need a lot of energy so she enjoys healthy foods like porridge, eggs, chicken, and salads, but when coming up to a match she can eat large meals to fuel up her energy levels.
Anna told the children to enjoy the many sports they can play at school, and said that she is really looking forward to taking part in the Rugby World Cup games which will be played in Dublin and Belfast in August this year.
