Indie line-up taking shape

AUGUST FESTIVAL SET TO BE ANOTHER SELL-OUT WITH CORONAS AND PREACHERS CONFIRMED

- BILL BROWNE

WITH the summer music festival season almost upon us the organisers of the 2017 Indiependence Music and Arts Festival have unveiled the daily line-up for the August bank-holiday weekend extravaganza.

Now in its 12th year, ‘Indie’ has gained an enviable reputation for the calibre of its headlines acts, with Public Enemy, Editors, Ash, Kodaline and De La Soul just some of the big names to have graced the main stage.

Once again organisers have pulled out all the stops to put together an impressive line-up for ‘Indie’ 2017, with Brit-award winning singer/songwriter headlining the main stage on Friday night.

Irish festival favourites The Coronas will return to the Deer Park venue for their headline slot on Saturday, with veteran Welsh rockers Manic Street Preachers bringing main stage curtain down on Sunday evening.

As ever Indie is not just about the headline acts with an amazing support cast of acts gracing the main stage over the weekend including All Tvvins, Sigma (DJ), Frank Turner, Hermitage Green, Brian Deady, The Riptide Movement and We Cut Corners also featuring on the impressive bill.

In a first for Indie the festival has also announced a new partnership with the Irish Music Rights Organisation (IMRO) that will see the organisation host a some of Ireland’s top upcoming acts on the IMRO Big Top Stage.

IMRO director of marketing and membership, Keith Johnson, said the organisation was delighted to be associated with the festival.

“Indiependence’s reputation as one of Ireland’s leading music festival continues to grow with each passing year, attracting music fans from throughout Ireland,” said Mr Johnson.

“We are delighted to be sponsoring the Big Top Stage this year, which will showcase some of Ireland’s finest new talent and we look forward to welcoming an exciting line-up of musicians to Mitchelstown in August.”

The commitment that Indie has shown to the Irish music scene since its inception has been well documented, with festival co-founder and organiser Shane Dunne saying the promotion of Irish talent, and in particular local acts, has always been important.

“The festival has been a proving ground for home-grown acts. The promotion of Irish talent has always been an important part of our ethos and always will be,” said Shane.

In keeping with that tradition the stages of Indie 2017 will feature slots from Raglans, Ryan Sheridan, Stomptown Brass, Overhead the Albatross, Hope Is Noise, MindRiot, Fangclub, Talos, Le Boom, Hawk Lion and Eve Belle to name just a few.

Festivals favourites such as the silent disco, the Beer Hall Stage and the comedy/spoken word stage will return this year, as will the recently added Indie VIP Garden and the Mitchelstown Music Trail.

While all of the ‘early-bird’ and subsequent tier tickets sold out in record time, day tickets priced at €50 went on sale last Friday and weekend camping tickets are still available for €119.

Shane pointed out that these prices have not changed since last year.

“We built Indie through the recession with an ethos of giving people value for money. While things may be getting better, but we do not see that as a reason to increase tickets prices,” said Shane.

“When you compare Indie to other similar Irish festival, you will see that tickets prices are a lot cheaper. We intend to keep it that way for as long as we can,” he pledged.
