‘Absolutely revolting’ fly-tipping leaves Mallow residents in disgust

- MARIA HERLIHY

BIG brother will shortly be recording anyone who continues to dump their rubbish at Carrigduff in Mallow.

Residents in the region told The Corkman that they were at “the end of their tether” as just shy of 1.5 metres of everything from domestic waste to construction rubble and hundreds of nappies have been dumped. The big fear for many residents is that the rubbish was dumped into a local stream and would cause a further environmental headache for Cork County Council.

“This dumping is absolutely revolting,” said one resident. “There are hundreds of nappies and even brand new clothing with the tags on. In fairness to Cork County Council, they previously got a private contractor to clean it all up. But no sooner was that done but it started all over again.”

However, CCC has taken a very much pro-active approach to this problem. A council spokesperson told The Corkman that all incidents of illegal dumping and fly-tipping are investigated in an effort to determine the offender and issue fines.

Litter wardens monitor known black spots and liaise with local commnity groups on a regular basis.

The spokespeson said that the local litter warden has been in contact with locals in the region for a period of time and the site has also been subject to a number of inspections.

Last year, the same site was cleaned up by CCC at a cost of approximately €400.

Fines have been issued previously in relation to dumping at this site and on a number of occasions the “culprits have also had to remove the material that they deposited.”

Now, the council has got the green light for funding under a recent anti-litter initiative launched by Minister Denis Naughten.

“An operational plan is being put in place with a view to cleaning up this location, including the use of CCTV to try and identify those responsible for illegal dumping at this location with a strong view to pursuing those involved,” said the spokesperson.
