Golf classic will tee up GAA club improvements
KILBRIN GAA will put the hurleys and footballs aside for one day and tee off their golf classic in Kanturk on Saturday, July 1, to raise some much needed funds to further develop facilities at their complex.
Development has continued over the past 30 years, since the arrival of the late Fr. Finbarr Kelleher coincided with the rebirth of Kilbrin GAA Club in the 1970s; land was purchased from the late Con Cronin and a pitch was laid out.
“In the 1980s major work was carried out when the Kelly Brothers from Ballydesmond levelled the playing surface. This work was a major success and gave us the top class surface we have today,” said spokesperson Tom O’Reilly.
In the early 2000s plans began for a new clubhouse, designed by Tim Linehan of T. G. Linehan Engineers, Kanturk with a view to making maximum use of space. The ground floor contains two dressing rooms, toilets, referee’s room, kitchen and the Dr Croke Memorial Room, upstairs sees a meeting room and gym.
A gym was kitted out during the past year and kitchen units are currently being fitted out. Addditionally floodlights were erected close to the pitch, this work was financed through local fundraising and grants received from The Sports Capital Programme, Cork County Council and the GAA at Duhallow, County and Provincial level.
“As we fundraise with a golf classic in Kanturk Golf Club, projects such as a hurling wall, astro turf and ancillary services are among the upcoming projects in the pipeline”, said Tom.
The Kilbrin Golf Classic is sponsored by T G Lenihan Consultant Engineering, Kanturk; Topline Burtons, Kanturk and Ducon Concrete, Kanturk. An open three person team event costs €120. Further details and time sheets for the event can be obtained from Seán at 087-2331518.
